1GB of memory and the HDD is probably 5400. But I've never seen a notebook take so long to load Windows. I've scanned the hard drive for any problems and I've also ran Memtest. I'm out of options but I know this is not normal behavior for a notebook with this much beef. Turion and 1GB of memory.

Ok what else is weird is that sometimes when I look at System Properties, it shows the processor as being a 787MHz processor and then sometimes. a 1.8 and then a regular 2.0. Is this normal? Does the Turion scale back when it is not needed?

Disregard this post. It has the Cool'n'Quiet enabled. Too bad I can't turn this off.

You probably already did this, but in case you didn't:

MSconfig ==> startup ==> disable all

And that ususally cut down the boot time. Boot time is almost always limited by the HDD read speed, which even with a 5400rpm drive, if you have a ton of programs at startup, plus windows prefetch, can slow the startup to unbearable limits.

Cool and Quiet will not affect the start-up times, if the computer is requireing CPU power than the clock speed will increase. The delay is in miliseconds and this is not your problem.

i have 7200rpm hard drive on my laptop and even on a fresh install it takes forever to load (IBM t42 1.7GHz PM). It is due to all the software that is loading for the laptop my guess. If the system is still slow from an OEM Windows(not a HP,IBM,DELL, etc.. ) install and defraged and if it is still slow than it is very much hardware related.

If you want you can try a program called TuneXP and look through the settings there are boot speed ups. http://www.driverheaven.net/dforce/default.php

Do you KNOW the harddrive is 5400rpm? Many many laptops still come with 4200rpm drives which feel like death.

Exactly which part of the whole start-up sequence is it taking an abnormally long time?

Have you checked the registry for boot up programs? Just because there isnt anything in the startup folder it doesn't mean there isn't anything running at boot time.

In general Turions are fine, your problem is something else.

I had the same problem with a centrino on my dad's laptop. It was a 1.6ghz but it read 580mhz or around there. I went into the bios and didn't really find anything wrong..but i chose the save changes option anyway and it worked (i'm thinking hand of god ...seriously, b/c I didn't do anything else) I didn't remove spyware, didn't defrag the hd (windows didn't say i needed to), didn't even re-install anything. also, no virusus and only 3 spyware objects found using ad-aware after it fixed itself.

so maybe try to save the bios..even if it looks good and you didn't change anything. good luck

I've got a Pentium M laptop that takes forever to boot. Has a 4200RPM harddrive, takes about 2 minutes from power on to boot, generally I just go into hibernate with it.

That 580 Mhz is because of Intel's power management. Unless required, processor stays in 580Mhz mode consuming less power and when required it automatically increases speed to 1.6Ghz.

To be sure download cpu-z. Load some heavy application and use cpu-z to see the speed changing to 1.6Ghz.

Unless that's a decently high-end model, it probably has a 4200 rpm disk. This is probably the first year that I have seen mainstream models(Excluding high end desktop replacements) from Dell and HP and the like even offering 5400rpm notebook drives as an option, let alone standard equipment.

Is there a lot of hard disk activity while it's taking so long to boot? The only time I've ever encountered a computer that takes abnormally long to boot it was due in part to malware, but mainly because they had McAfee Virus Scan and Norton Anti-Virus installed at the same time.
Removing one of them reduced the boot time from 5+ minutes to <2 minutes.

If you can't figure this out on your own, you shouldn't be working on this person's computer. I don't mean to be rude, but any competent PC tech wouldn't have to ask this question. Good luck

Are you serious?

I am not omnipotent. I am sorry if you feel that way towards other techs who may not know everything.

I actually created a thread awhile back and most stated that they use this message board when they are stuck in a rut. If you search my posts I don't often create threads asking for help. This is a once in a blue moon type of rut that I am in.

I am more than confident in my skills as a technician. However, I make no claims that I know everything about every single processor out there. I am working my way through the troubleshooting process.

Currently I am running a chkdsk on the drive and it is taking an insanely long time. I am going to await the results and see what is up.
