Returning Samsung to buy LG is like cutting off your nose to spite...a giant heap of shit.

LG is awful at everything. They're Sony, except instead of the occasional good product, they have the occasional fire.

Want one that lasts forever and has no electronics - all mechanical controls? Speed Queen. We got ours a month ago and it's built like a tank. Same ones used in Laundromats but without the coin mechanism.

Don't like how the "Energy Star" stuff keeps the water level too low? There's an unofficial adjustment you can do.

AVOID electrolux. Bought my parents a full set (Microwave, oven, fridge) of it and had to have the microwave repaired multiple times (eventually got replaced) and the oven had multiple repairs as well. It's another brand whose name people associate with quality but has gone dow nhill. Next time I'm only buying bosch or high end appliances.

I remember the heyday of American appliances. My parent's washer/dryer (Maytag) lasted forever.

Even back in the '90s things were built better. I swore that I wouldn't switch to HDTV until the old one (bought back then - Philips - not sure where made) died. But I just retired it. I was afraid it would last another fifteen years.

New TV's don't seem to last too long either. In Amazon reviews there's always someone who says it only lasted a couple of years. Philips reviews were better, so I went with them again.

Edit: But they apparently only sell their washers in India.

Why do washer/dryers need circuit boards? Plenty of room for big, easy to replace mechanical switches.

Maybe it's worth it to get a commercial machine, but who knows how much more reliable they are.

An old DuMore Die Grinder my grandfather used while making tanks at Chrysler in the 40's during WWII.

Basically a precursor to a Dremel and still works.

Still have an old Singer 100th anniversary sewing machine that doesn't work atm, but could be fixed, might have to look into that.

It's just a minor thing, it's still operational motor wise.

Might be worth a bit.

Out of the poll choices I've had the best luck with Whirlpool. GE has been decent too needed more service but getting it done promptly was never an issue.

Sounds about right. I hope it doesn't turn out that way for us. We just spent nearly $3k for an LG washer/dryer combo. Yes, we got the warranty! But so far the machines are excellent....or maybe that's because our point of reference are the coin-op machines at our previous apartment building.

Almost all makers have issues. I have Whirlpool for my recent (3 years old?) HE washer/dryer, Samsung for my dishwasher (3 years old?), my fridge is Whirlpool (1999 by previous owner), about the same date and maker for my oven (which sometimes in the last month the elements don't work although nothing wrong with them...there is a computer/circuit problem in the oven)...my microwave from about the same age (I bought the house in 2007 and it was preinstalled is GE.

My next machines will be Speed Queens. I didn't know about them until too late. Like how it happens usually, you have to upgrade do to a failure prior to being able to do the research.

What else are they going to do? Wave a magic wand and fix it with pixie dust? Samsung doesn't directly employ repair people, you know. The most any company would do is pay for the repair under warranty. LG would handle the situation no differently. Neither would any other manufacturer.

They don't have a choice. You call an authorized service center, tell them it's a warranty repair, and they bill Samsung unless they can show that the damage was from improper installation. They probably assumed that they didn't need to give you an authorized service center phone number because you'd already had a tech come out (you did make sure the tech you called was from a factory authorized service center, right).

I can understand the frustration, but I honestly don't see what you expected them to do that they didn't.

We have a kenmore fridge (LG) that I just had some work done to, 8 years old. Repair guy said he wouldn't bother if it was a samsung. My Mom's samsung has had 2 circuit boards already. Maybe 5 years old.

What appliances are made in China? The electronics may be from China, but whirlpool washers are stamped and made in Clyde, Ohio.

So my washer/dryer both broke in same week. I shopped around for a week and settled on a Samsung set. Sunday I purchased the set from our local lowes. I had to get a friend to help move the set in. The washer was did not work on day one. Today a "tech" came out and guessed its a part that will take 2 weeks to get. So I'm expected to wait 2 more weeks to wash laundry.

I called Samsung expecting some type of help in expediting the part or situation, to no avail. I asked them if I should just return the set and purchased a LG set, I was told if that's what makes me feel better. Needless to say I will never purchase any Samsung products again.

Samsung will reimburse Lowe's, or it's repair subcontractor. They really can't do a thing for you. A *REAL* appliance repairman/company could have the part, and the repairs completed in 2, or 3 days tops,(on your dime), which is what Lowe's is hoping for, hence the 2, or 3 week cool your heels wait. Ya wanna see em step, and fetch? Just tell Lowe's you're bringing it back for a full refund.
You may want to do a little more research on brands. For me, old school without the digital bells, and whistles is more reliable. 28 years with our dial-up Maytags.

Too bad on your Samsung. I chose a Whirlpool front loader and it nearly shook my house down (on 2nd floor). I swapped it out for another Whirlpool and the same thing (several people came out and couldn't get it to stop). Swapped a 2nd time for Samsung and have never looked back or been happier. Maybe OP just got unlucky. Mine have been great (nearly 5 years now).

I'm considering a new washer. It seems like front loaders can develop a smell if you aren't judicious about wiping water from the seals and running special cleaner through them. The high efficiency top loaders that don't have an agitator have reports of tightly bundling, wrinkling, and tearing clothes. Are these claims true/commonplace?

You asked them if you should return it and buy a product from a competitor. What did you expect them to say? To them it probably sounded like you had already made your mind up and were deciding to act like a douche even though it was nothing they had done.
