We'll see I guess, our washer just died and the wife bought a Maytag Centennial 3.8 washer.

I'm a bit skeptical.

I'm usually the one making mechanical decisions but she seemed to want to try it out.

I'm considering a new washer. It seems like front loaders can develop a smell if you aren't judicious about wiping water from the seals and running special cleaner through them. The high efficiency top loaders that don't have an agitator have reports of tightly bundling, wrinkling, and tearing clothes. Are these claims true/commonplace?

I have a new LG top loader without the agitator. Not had problems like that with our clothes. Going on two months and we do a couple loads a week. I and my wife are very happy with it.

We'll see I guess, she was told most people that have problems tend to over pack them.

I guess the drum is so big the guy at the store told her people tend to overload them and causes problems.

It's one of the non agitator ones.

We bought an LG drier to replace a 30 year old Maytag that was starting to have some minor issues. What a POS, generic problems with the main gas control valve shutting off, essentially the drier never got more than barely warm like it was running in fluff mode.

LG is Goldstar in stainless wrapping, and what we discovered is that the service organization was still solidly Goldstar quality (Cheapest of Korean brands).

We still have the Maytag washer, but as soon as it coughs we will put in a Whirlpool Duet.

That is not the terms of any warranty I have ever seen in my entire life. I don't know a single adult who would expect what you have described.

ZV

but the warranty is irrelevant because store return policies are typically 30-90 days so "white glove" replacement should be expected within 90 days.

Apparently LG front-load washers (residential, anyway) are some of the most reliable out there.

What do you mean by "just died?" I see a lot of people who say that. And, it seems that the majority of the time, it's a simple 5 minute $10 part fix on the older washers. Coupling between the motor and transmission; or dog ears in the agitator.

Damn, I didn't realize so many people talked shit about LG stuff. I've always thought they were high quality. I have a 42" LCD TV and a 3D Blu-ray player and 5.1 speakers and they all work fantastic. I think I had an LG phone back in the day too. I'll definitely keep buying their stuff.

My Cabrio washer started making death sounds literally the day my free extended warranty ended. I looked up online and figured out it could be a couple cheap things and one really expensive one. Found out the on-board diagnostic menu. It really only ruled out the expensive part.

I finally disconnected it and got it on it's belly. Turns out a simple plastic to plastic connection unsnapped.

It's been running fine since 6+ months.

I'm living proof that you don't have to be that bright, or mechanically adept. My old GE washer broke down twice recently (two totally unrelated problems). Each time I went on partselect.com-which after you input what your problem is gives you a list of probable solutions with a percentage of customers who report that part solved their problem. The site (plus youtube) is loaded with instruction videos that are great for the inexperienced. Each time I got my parts in two days or less (I'm on the east coast). Total cost was maybe half of one service call and a half hour of my time. Best of all I now have a working quality washer instead of the POS they are selling now.

Washing machines seem to be like cell phone carriers. None of them are perfect and you'll find people that have had bad experiences with every one.

I'm a Maytag fan personally. Every appliance, including washers and dryers, that I've owned by them have been virtually bullet-proof.

Isn't Maytag just a rebranded Whirlpool at this point? The Maytags in the early 90's were the stuff of legends though.

I read this article last night on BBC and now this thread appears.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-27253103

That's messed up, appliances which are a pain in the ass to install and haul away should be expensive and built to last! I'm sure most people who own their homes are willing to pay extra to not have to go through the hassle of replacing clunky machines like a washer or dryer.

Nah the tub shot too it looks, it's going to washer heaven.

He's not that bright.

Nah, I used to build parts for Whirlpool years ago before I advanced to Aerospace equipment these days.

You're right I'm not too smart, I just prototype Avionics equipment on a daily basis.

It's over 20 years old, probably 25 hadn't looked and is Kaput.

It isn't a simple fix issue.

I could probably build one from scratch, but why.

It's just worn out.

Getting rid of it isn't a problem, they are dropping it off tomorrow morning, Il'll slap it in stick the other one on the curb, we have large item pick up here once a week.

We refused the first one on Sunday, as the side was dented to hell.

I like things simple like the Admiral dryer on the the right, but the wife seemed to want to try this thing out and after watching the things it does in a hot high humidity environment, I hope everything digital has been enclosed a bit.

It's what she wanted to try out, she does the laundry so I'll live with it, I stuck a huge blanket and a few things in there and put it up on high end to see wtf it does.

Seems weird to watch a washing machine try to think myself.

And yes, more or less.

Which would you guys choose?

The LG WM3050CW for $579 or the Whirlpool Duet for $699?

Just want a basic, reliable, affordable front loader. Don't need too many gimmicks like steam and whatnot.

I noticed the Whirlpool is 244 lbs compared to the 180 lbs of the LG. Don't know if thats a sure sign of better construction or not.

The LG is smoking the Whirlpool on ratings. I like my Whirlpools but they are Cabrio top loading washer and front loading dryer. I have had one problem with the washer in the 3 years I have owned them that I simply just put in on it's face. Checked everything and stood it back up and it worked fine. That said during this same time my drain for the washer backed up and flooded the laundry a bit (root broke though) so maybe not my machine's fault. Sadly, many reviews of my own pair got bad ratings the year AFTER I bought them.

If you had paid Lowes to deliver... They would have had to come and swap it out.

When we bought our Kitchen appliances from them, they delivered a dishwasher that had issues, a fridge and stove that had blemishes. They took $200 off for the blemishes dent (not really noticeable anyway) and swapped out the dishwasher.

Sometimes in an effort to save money you cost yourself a lot of grief. Been there, done that.

I bought a new Whirlpool with the old school agitator last year after researching all the newer high efficiency washers. Based on reviews I decided to stay old school. It washes clothes. I don't need it to have four levels of gentle or ten selections for the level of "dirtiness"... I don't need it to steam them. I just want the fucker to wash my clothes and be reliable - hence buying the simplest washer I could find on the market that was about $400-500 cheaper than any of the fancy ones I looked at. Oh... and I can fix the thing myself.

Guess what? My clothes are clean.
