don't forget GeoffS, baldy18, mastertech( i think)
Also RaySun2Be.

And nice to see you around, TAandy.

Edit: I'd throw Engineer in, but he's around, just not in DC.

The real killer - new hobbies and interests!

What has everyone else gotten interested in that takes up the spare time we used to spend on DC?

For me, its been animated Christmas lighting. Just finished a fourth season and still adding for next year.

I did just pass the 600,000,000 Mpts milestone in DPAD, so I am still active. I can't compete with the BOINC entries there but I'm still at the top!

Yea I miss Smoke too, I was exchanging PMs with him sporadically for a while, that was sometime back now. I wonder how he is? Think I'll try to prod him

[edit]I've just PMed him, btw I noticed his posting abruptly stopped 1st Aug last year...

Dude that is awesome! I remember first seeing this a few years ago but your presentation seems more cohesive...to me at least.

For me the original Seti project really sucked me in but since it ended I've focused squarely on F@H and just don't post like I used to and it seems I'm not alone. I come here every few days and am still amazed at the lack of posting activity here.

I recall big drives to build membership, reworking the TA DC welcome thread and lobbying the admins to make our DC teams easier to find by putting them on the front page, although that never happened. Smokeball's big movers thread, Ohiodude's stats and IndyJaws bringing the big farm in really kept things interesting. Engineer was a big voice around these parts for a long time as well.

I still enjoy DC and have no intentions of quitting but the Anandtech DC forum as a whole has changed. I took a break from the TeAm for awhile and perhaps it was a healthy thing to do but I eventually ended up back here.

I pop in every now and again. Not running any projects at the moment, as my hardware isn't up to it.

I sure miss the old RC5 and Seti Classic races, with the stats app you could easily setup a race and track it. I was never enamored with BOINC. Maybe because I tried running it when it first came out and was so buggy. Don't get me wrong, it's a great way to get a lot of projects CPU time, it just wasn't for me.

Back then, work wasn't as challenging and I was able to spend time on the computer. These days, work is a challenge, and when I get home, some nights I don't even log on to check email. Or maybe I'm getting older and slowing down.

The TeAm here at Anandtech was and is the best, and the TeAm is what keeps me hanging around, even if I'm just lurking.

When Seti first started in 1999 and was the only game in town, the people involved where all computer/science geeks that new the risks and knew it was gonna blow up at times and that was all part of the fun. Now that its gone mainstream and 7 gazillion projects coming and going, it gets real old, real fast reading message boards with the same 9 users complaining "I bought this really cheap crap, tell me how to make it work and your project sucks if it wont".

We used to figure it out on our own and remember we were dedicating unused CPU cycle to science to use as they see fit. Its become a free gaming platform for the RAC wars and the masses complaining "I had to go 7 seconds without work".

Back in Seti classic days, This team was a force to be recond with. WE ended up 4th overall, at times being 2nd. Even as a team we have scatterd to different projects and while we rule in some of the smaller projects, the days of the WHOLE team turning on every last thing to get one more WU cruched per day in the challanges past are gone.

Imagine if this team went into any project and turned EVERY cpu/gpu/ps3/toaster we had on it. WE would be news makers again.

I still crunch seti cause the science intersts me, but since I dont have the resources to build 9 gpu quads and the theme of the boards today is stats, I check in from time to time just to look, but the 2 comps left have things set to 10 days cache, run the optimized apps and if its 2 months between checking, everything is just chugging away.

Lost its luster? definitly. Lost my interest? never will.

QFT.

It is us - the active members in the forum - which may bring back some of the old luster - or generate new one. And if there would be some new glimmer then some of the old and crunching members would possibly come back. At least: I promise to try.

Still using the same old cane "pops"?

I just looked at some stats and at this rate it's going to take me some 8 years to overtake my next team member just 3 spots up and 35 years for the one after that.

That's what happens when you stick with one big project for a long time. If you jump around to a few different projects, one at a time, you see yourself rising in the rankings in each. The fact that you're slipping in the others can be out-of-sight and out-of-mind.

What project are you working on now? Are you using that Radeon?

wischeez, long time no see ... I hope life treats you well!

I still come here once in a while. Can't afford to crunch anymore, but I still like reading!
It's been pretty good except my kids are teenagers now, and you know how that goes $$$ ! Hope everything has been good with you.

WEll, yeah, I know ... I have six of them. The first has moved out - but there are still five more. The youngest is 14 ...
I still crunch - more than ever as a matter of fact, but I am very seriously considering of retireing at least 4 of my computers - they are too slow and draw too much power ... 20 KWh/day ...

Woah! you must have the patience of a saint to look after 5 teenagers!

Amen!

Don't you let your PC crunch when it's already on anyway? Would give you a little output at least .
