Team TADF is in 14th place, 30 million behind 12th, 38 million behind 11th, 44 million behind 11th, and 125 million behind 10th! We have a very solid group of 21 users that have been cruching the the heck out of this protein! We have continued our fight to stay in the top 20 but the top 10 is where TA belongs! Help us in our battle to get back into the top 10!:|

I can't add any more power to the cause at the moment but I'll give the thread a bump in hopes someone can switch a machine to the DF project.

fill in the necessary forms. you will be given a handle.

Login Here
there is a chooser box for Team, change to TeamAnandtech

Download Text Client
unzip to a folder. then run the foldit.bat file
you will be given several prompts.
the first one is for the handle you received when you registered.
answer Y to every question but proxy, unless you need a proxy. hit enter and the client will start, go ahead and hit Q as soon as it starts.

dfGUI
very useful tool for running DF, almost mandatory. Go to config tab. This allows you install as a service (recommended) if you are running XP or 2K. and other tweaks to the client. the most important is use extra ram. another good one to check is restart inactive client. the client will use around 92 megs of RAM for this protein, the amount of RAM used varies by the current protein.
If running 98, check the hidden radio button on the DF client box, that way the cmd window is not visible and taking up space on your taskbar and if using 98 make sure the quiet mode check box is checked, it should provide a small gain in performance as there is no output to the console.
hit start client and youre good to go. its really fairly easy.
if you need anymore help help, dont hesitate to post questions.
we'll get you straightened out.
thanks for your interest!

I think when SETI ends a lot of us, myself included, will be switching over to folding. I want to be doing something useful

I guess that's what all other DC projects besides SETI will hear in the near future even if losing ground pretty fast. I really hope that the Berekely guys announce a final date pretty soon as this looks like going on for ever and ever. (no insult on you onelin0!!)

if you are looking at the structures that DFGUI is telling you, i wouldnt.
either i dont understand it or its unreliable, i think its a bit of both.
what generation out of the 250 is your machine working on and how long has it been crunching?

This makes it tricky. Both SETI & F@H need more power but unfortunately we've used up the TeAm's entire cruncher pool for SETI. Let's see what happens...

um i've had two machines crunching...my 1ghz athlon(o/c @ 1.33GHz) It's now been running for 9 & 1/2 hours and is up to generation 50. my 1.7ghz centrino, which i just switched back over to seti@home, was running for 8 hours and made it to generation 21.

that seems really slow for that centrino. were you using the extra ram switch on the laptop?
hmmm, the 1.33 seems about right.

yeah the centrino has the extra ram setting enabled...weird. considering it gets through quite a few seti WU's a day?! that's why i switched it back to seti...wasn't contributing much to the total generations! LoL...any clues how i can get more outta the centrino? because i swear it should be performing better then the 1.33ghz

Can someone explain what the difference is between the Distributed Folding DC project and Fold@Home from Stanford.

Do they try to look at the same things or is there a website I could look at.

UPDATE --- Centrino problem

It turned out to be that the GUI client wasn't enabling the "use extra ram" option! all fixed now!..now only if they would release a better version so i can put my entire 1 gig of ram to use

I have 7 machines hooked up through a wireless WAP and wired...a couple don't have monitors attached to them. Is there some kind of application for FOLDING@HOME that allows me to view current stats on all my machines so that I don't have to manually check on them? I saw one for SETI, I think it was called SETIWatch. It's a pain having to do it manually every time and by manually, I mean setting up a shortcut to the logfile_01.txt for each machine.

Thanks,
Martin Trevino

I would recommend using realvnc. This program enables you to use both monitor and keyboard/mouse on your desired machine as if they where connected to another machine at the same time. Works on both Linux and Windows machines, like a charm.

yeah im about to install the program on my main cruncher box because the monitor blew up...lets you use the computer as though you were sitting in front of it. plus much better to use then that joke microsoft calls "remote desktop"

I use VNC the comps don't even have a monitor mouse or keyboards.

I also think that once you see Seti ending phase I you'll see a big leap in DF.

I think all projects are going to have a big jump in membership.

yeah that would be nice if it were able to do that.
but i think as it stands right now the entire protein chain is loaded into RAM.
good to see you got that centrino folding. i bet it will be ripping through those gens pretty fast.

question? did my thread last night explain everything well enough? if there was anything you were confused on i will note it, so we could maybe get a 'getting started guide' hosted somewhere.

EDIT: Stats! how could i forget stats...
Dyyryath's Stats
its down for a day or so
there is also
Statsman
and of course the official DF site you can check your stats as well.

If you set up VNC as a server on your crunching PC in your own private network, can you access it from outside of your network? Also, doesn't this pretty much set you up for an intruder to sniff out the port and get control of your pc?

The application works without a hitch but I'm just a bit worried about the implications.

Thanks,
Martin Trevino

You might try THIS fahstats program for F@H. It has a slick Summary feature that can grab the info from other machines on your LAN. In the Settings tab of the fahstats program you specify the share name and folder that you have F@H installed in, for example: "Quiet","\\Quiet\F@H\". I have been unable to get fahstats to read from my Linux box, but my 3 other Windows machines are no problem. Note this is for F@H, not Distributed Folding.......

I am running alot fewer machines than I was running on RC5-64, and have contributed a buttload! My attitude is that with DF it may result in something I will see in my lifetime! Proteins are found in every part of life even down to the simple flu bug that "bugs" us all! I had over 90 systems crunching even down to a 40 processor crack rack! I am running a dozen or so systems right now and have made it to 90 million! Team TADF deserves to be back in the top 10 which is why I have called for "CALL TO ARMS!"

None taken! I'm curious if the Berkeley guys are purposely not giving one out so 80K WU swaps at the last minute (*cough* BR) don't happen on purpose. I enjoy reading the forums and saw a SETI rally and decided it would be an alright 'first' project to do for the TeAm.
