Distributed Rainbow Table Project

Anyone ever heard of this project? I found it while doing some research for a project in my Computer Security class. Very interesting applications and uses.

I added it on my Linux server laptop, but it makes that thing heat up like something crazy. Might delegate it to a remote machine.

Yeah, I have run it for some time. Is a high yield projects.
I think I crunched 450 000 - 600 000 points a day using NVIDIA GPUs.
However I was wondering if these tables could be as easily abused as well as used and I quit when reacing my goal (10M). OTOH: all projects could be abused, but OTTH this is a security oriented projects ... I just don´t know enough.

Yeah, it is a high temp-project. Some of my GPUs ran @ 95 - 98ºC. But a good aftermarket cooler helped a lot.

From security standpoint I think the project is ok. I've seen some questionable users in the forums but I think the admins have the right overall goals.

I'm a Network/Security Admin by trade. I am hoping to use the data from this project sometime soon on my network to test my own users passwords. It seems a very legitimate way to ensure that the users aren't using very stupid passwords that just barely match our rules and giving users a concrete example of why they should use better passwords. I don't think average joe would think its a real issue till someone shows it to them directly.

On other hand you could also use it to crack passwords for less than positive ends. But this project isn't doing anything revolutionary in cracking password technology, they are pre-computing hashes, which makes it faster to crack a password. The password was insecure and crackable either way, it'd just take a little longer because apps had to compute the hashes each time based on a dictionary attack or other technology.
