Lan Install anyone?

1) Copy your own User_info.sah

2) Edit the SETIREG.TXT proxy settings to match your own or Orangekids

3) If its a large assimilation then use the NET VIEW command to create a list of all the computers on the LAN then format or edit the existing pcnames.txt to look like this:

You've done some very nice work there and it should be very helpful. Only wish I could assimilate some corporate environment where I'd need such an install. Of course, this would still be usefull if you had family members that like to fiddle around on your computer(s).

Thanks Shux, now all i have to do is change the userinfo file to my own and e-mail to our college sysadmin and convince him to run it!

One little question i tried to run that net_view command on my little local lan in winXP and it just said invalid file name or batch file any idea's why that would be?

The actual command should be "NET VIEW > C:\path\to\directory\PCNAMES.TXT" without quotes and add the PATH that you want.

Glad you got it working!

There really isn't any need to have your SETIQ go through Orange Kid's since your SETIQ is already going to cache WUs. And all the individual stats will be lost at Orange Kid's anyway since all the connections to his SETIQ will be coming from one IP#.

Nice, I'll have to look this over later. Now if someone can find me a new job and cover the legal defense I know of 25,000 pc's we can assimilate. One of the guys I work with figured out we could go from 0 to number 1 in two weeks and this was about a year and a half ago when most pc's at our work were 233-450's. Imagine the disk space needed for setiq.

That doesn't even count 400+ HP-UX servers, maybe 600 NT boxes....oh and don't forget about a few Sun E10K's. They only have 64 processors each.

Just for the legal record, I am a firm believer in only running it on pc's you have permission on or something like that.

I could write a pretty impressive letter as an official of the SETI PROJECT asking your CEO if his company would help out our science project that is depending on the donated spare CPU cycles of large Corporation's excess computer power. I would recommend you as a most qualified person that could see to the installation of the software that would be done in such a fashion that there would be no detrimental effect whatsoever on his corporation's computers.

I'm willing.....what do you think?

Oh man if I were only still in school. my high school had some 500+ machines, the other main high school had a similar number, and most other schools in my district have atleast 1 computer in each class room. plus a computer lab (for the middle schools) or two (the high schools). heh
actually I would never be able to use seti on the other schools but I'm pretty sure I would have been able to get my building administrator's permission, I had him as a teacher for 4 years and I had some pretty good influence over him

Heck, go and ask him if you can do it now. All he can say is no but he might say yes and that would really help us out.

I am contemplating emailing him....
he came into my work(a computer store[heh if only it was legal and moral to install seti service on all the machines my store sells.}) and bought some stuff today...
I could call him at home....nah don't wanna bother him. My friend pranked his house a couple of weeks ago at 2 in the morning....eek

I dont think he would let me do it unless I was there every day to monitor the setiq and personally handle any tech support calls he recieved about anything to do with the clients.... I used to be one of his techs.
