Distribution: slackware8 - deskjet 720c

anyone managed to make an hp deskjet 720c parallel printer to work?

well in default installation (before recompiling the kernel) the kernel finds the printer in the boot time and it is available as

>> lp

I do a

>> lpc
>> status

but the daemon in always not running..
I am trying to "up" or "start" lp but the printer is enabled, spooling is enabled but the deamon is not there...

any idea ? anyone manage to set a similar deskjet correctly ?

Check if lpd is running LP Daemon as the name states.. do a ps aux|grep lpd....
If it's not then you need to run it usually you can call it with /usr/sbin/lpd, you'll need
to change one of the rc.x files to get it to start at boot time, search the rc.x files in /etc/rc.d/ you should find
a line commented...

If everything is as it should this should be enough...

lpd runs on the boot time

Its not my first day with linux . . . just something with the whole configuration suscks...

I used my old Hunday printer 10 years old, line printer, and it does print better than it does with my win95 system.. but that hp-never worked on the slackware box.

what filter are you using in printcap?

Have you tried LPRng??

in slack there are three filters available...

Lpr , BSD and one more not sure about the name something like LPR......

Well, here at the lab we're using LPRng under RH6.2 to print on a Deskjet 1120c
is works...

So I suppose that slack shouldn't be very different...that is, you could use LPRng in slack...

And the question was filer are you using to print under lpd?

does different filters support different types of printers ? postscript or not ?

I will try to change the filters...

Do you know how to do it manually ?

I have a window that asks me to chose a filter what I wanna do it manauly in case the wizard doesn;t work..

well I will have a go later and come with the results....
