But I'm keeping my internet access with my cable company. Hit me with your best Directv stories. I'll be with them for two years, so I'm getting comfortable.

Only basic cable available in our area with a total of 12 snowy channels for $50 a month. Switched to DirecTV and its been flawless. Usually our power goes out before the storm takes out the signal.

I'm looking forward to moving out of my college apartment with crappy cable that hardly works. I was playing with the numbers last week, and DirecTV is cheaper than Comcast for what I need, along with having more channels and better quality. Do they still have that $100/each referral thing going on?

The choice xtra package have all the channels I need...all I really watch is network tv and sports, so BTN and Fox Sports are the only exotic things I need, plus you get the free HD receiver with that, and I only need one receiver, so it should work out well.

Same. A little peeved about some channel lineup changes that lost us stuff we watched, and got us stuff that's crap. Also irritated by the rate hike coming this month (or next, can't remember). And of course they nickel and dime you if you've got more than one tv.

Still, eleventy-billion percent better than comcrap.

I would take no tv before I ever used DirectTV. The product is good enough that I switched from Dish Network after three years, but the customer service is so bad that I cancelled my contract early at the cost of $400. It was worth every penny. Their multiple room DVR set up is horrible compared to Dish Network. Either one is light years ahead of my local cable.

I am curious about this as well. I was with Comcast for 8 years too long, and finally went with AT&T's Uverse, which to this day has been almost flawless... HD quality is not that great, but solid phone, TV, and internet service. The only problem is that my bill is $175 a month for HD, 3 boxes, 1 DVR, phone, and the 18 meg internet line, which is at $30 off per month promo for 6 months. Well that promo just quit and now my bill is now $208. They wouldn't work with me at all, so I told them this would be my last month, because $170 was way too much... expecially for as little TV as I watch. I think I am going to go with Direct TV and keep ATT for the internet only. I just hate that I have to ditch a service that I am finally happy with, simply because their prices are way too high...

If I was able to pay for multiroom TV for the same cost as single room (as you do with cable) I would consider it more of an option that I do now.

I've actually got an install scheduled on April 19th. Switching from Time Warner cable. I still haven't decided if I want to go through with it or not though.

Once your contract is up switch to Dish since you get the extra good channels for free for a bit and dish > directv.

I get every cable TV channel there is, have 2 DVR's and internet.

I'm looking for a house in one of our markets so it will be free and 25 meg internet instead of just a comp discount with 6 meg.

What makes Dish Network better? I still have time to cancel before the install, so whichever is better I'll go with.

I was with DirecTV for about 6 months when they removed Versus from their programming.(Frequently watched and now they carry way more MMA events than they did before.) I called and bitched and they agreed to extend the promotional price for the rest of my contract. ($65/month for 2 years instead of the $90 I'd be paying after the first year) Surprise surprise, my promotion ends and it goes to $90. I've been on the phone with a representative every day for the past week and absolutely nothing. Filed a complaint with the BBB to get out of the contract and get as far from DirecTV as possible.

There are horror story's for every company but, an outright lie like this should never be acceptable.

Both companies have their strengths. DirecTV is more expensive but they have a lot of exclusive sports packages on PPV that you won't find with Dish (Dish has NHL Center Ice, NBA League Pass, ESPN Full Court College Basketball, ESPN Gameplan College Football) and DirecTV adds NFL Sunday Ticket, MLB Extra Innings, NCAA March Madness and some others.

If you are a sports guy, DirecTV makes a good choice. But look at regular package prices (after the introductory offers are up) and Dish comes out ahead. Dish has packages at $24.99, $39.99, $52.99, $62.99 and $99.99 (this excludes extras like HD, DVR, additional outlets) for DishFAMILY, Top 120, Top 200, Top 250 and the Everything Pak.

DirecTV's packages go $58.99, $63.99, $68.99 and $114.99 (Choice 150, Choice Xtra, Choice Ultimate and Premier). I believe you can call them and get their 'FAMILY' package for $29.99 but I'm not sure you can do that while you're under contract.

DirecTV is offering $29 off for the first year, Dish is offering $15 off for the first year. Both have easy to use pricing calculators on their websites with easy links to all legal disclosures, terms and conditions. Give it a try.

It really comes down to what channels you need and what is a reasonable price to you. And of course, both have an equal number of extremely satisfied and super pissed-off customers with horror stories.

Had DTV for 3 years and had to use customer service a handful of times. Never had any issues and things were taken care of quickly and accurately. Feed cuts out probably twice a year because of extremely heavy summer thunderstorms.

Had Dish before that and it would cut out during light rain showers...and their customer service was terrible during our contract.

I did that exact thing for about 3 weeks, 2 years ago. I begged the wife to let me switch it back to TWC from day one. PQ was very noticeably poorer with Direct.

Couple that with their horrible service, and then refusal to refund my money after I had their service less than 3 complete weeks.....when at that time, their repair guy came out and told me the install should have never been done because of the tree line and I'd always have problems......yeah, it's a longer story than that, but suffice to say, I think they suck.

DirecTV's HD quality is generally regarded as the best among cable/satellite providers.

Always going to have customer service issues, though. Something similar happened with my parents...dish was mounted in a poor spot and had issues with a tree far too often, took about 5 calls to get a guy to move it on top of the screened-in porch.

I've been using satellite for about 12 years now. I've been back and forth between Dish and DirecTV quite a few times.
I've stuck with DirecTV for the past 3 years though. Their customer service is better on average as well as signal strength. I lose signal on my antenna in the attic during a storm before I lose the satellite. Even then, I lose it maybe twice a year and once is because the dish is full of snow.
I've also had much better luck getting upgraded receivers/equipment with DirecTV.
