Hey guys, I want to take some time to tell you about Divinity II and the newly released Dragon Knight Saga.

Last year Larian Studios released Divinity II : Ego Draconis. Some of you already played it i'm sure. The game received mostly not too good reviews from many so-called professional reviewers/websites. I know, it's sometimes a matter of taste and opinion so i'm not gonna debate on that.

Recently Larian released Dragon Knight Saga. It's Ego Draconis with a new engine, new content (quests, items) plus it include the Flames of Vengeance expansion.

This game is a rare jewel, rarely seen in the world of RPGs. It's engrossing, addictive. The world is simply stunning, not only by it's details but also by it's inhabitants and their troubles, comments, weird and absurd humor. By it's secrets, so tempting and rewarding yet so dangerous. It's turns and twists at every corner. It's history filled with love, betrayal, laughs and tears, violence and compassion, honor and duty, shame and pride, lost pigs and bandits and dragons.

It gets to you unlike any other games out there but you have to at least open you mind to something amazingly different. It's not your North American, handholding RPGs where you just have to open your map to see where you have to go. You have to get out there and explore, make mistakes and learn from them and venture forth. By the end of your journey, you'll be rewarded for your hard work and efforts and of that, you can be assured.

When you'll think about trying it, do it in a completely opened state of mind. Think about your first bought computer game where you entered a store, read the back of the box and bought it because, and simply because, YOU tought the game looked cool. A time where "pros reviews" we're scarce and almost frowned upon...a time where gaming was about having fun in your parents basement and not where graphics matters more that story.

RPG fans, do yourself a favor and fetch this jewel, play it, enjoy it.

Why does this sound like an advertisement?

I love RPGs, but I can afford to wait on this one to go cheaper

Just stating that any RPGs fans out there SHOULD check this game out. It's hugely more than what the internet makes it look.

Can you load saved games from Ego Draconis through Dragon Knight Saga? I still have yet to finish the game but it would be cool to get back into it on the new engine if it is a drastic improvement like you mention.

Is there a good story (and by that I mean can you influence it ala dialogue choices and what not) and is it more of an action RPG? I have a tough time enjoying "RPGs" that are actually all kill kill kill.

I agree with the OP the DIIED is a pretty fun RPG, and dragon knight saga builds on that by adding new features and shinier graphics.

THAT SAID

Before you buy the game, wait until Larian fully patches it to remove a hard coded 30 FPS cap from it. The developer included the cap not to consolize the game or because they have some deep rooted hatred of pc gamers, but rather because they were having a very hard time dealing with a "runaway" condition that has something to do with multicore processing. They are aware of the issue, and are actively seeking to fix it. In fact, I think they have already released a hotfix for retail versions of the game. But as yet, that hotfix has not been pushed through electronic distribution mechanisms, e.g., Steam.

FWIW, I hope that Larian is able to fix the 30FPS cap issue, because I had fund with Ego Draconis and would like to spend more time with the expansion. But given that I make my living with my eyes, I cannot afford to spend significant amounts of time stting 24 inches from image projected at 30 FPS. I can here my mother already, "don't sit too close to the TV! You'll ruin your eyes!"

Yeah anything lower than 60 FPS will make you need glasses and eventually go blind.

Yeah, this looks almost good but the reviews are murky at best. How is the voice acting (there is voice acting, I assume...)? Is it as atrocious as Arcania: Gothic 4's?

Demo was OK. Cant save and I got tired in the 2nd town. Exploring is not particularly fun though the walkthroughs I read make it seem like thats what you will spend a big chunk of your time doing. Combat was clunky even with the pause feature. But the world is definitely beautiful and the story seems solid enough.
I may buy this between the fall and spring semester, but I dont think I have enough free time right now to get into a new game.

It sounds like an advertisement because he doesn't bother to touch on the many negatives the game has.. starting with terrible character animation. Granted, I never really played it that much.. but still, certain things were evident from the start.

Don't worry i'm not getting anything from anyone with this post.

It's just that (stating an opinion here) this game has so many good things but sure it's not perfect but I don't know, to each his own and for me this game has everything and to some gamers out there that didn't heard about it, maybe they'll want to give it a try and I hope they'll enjoy it.

Here's some pros and cons based on my experience:

PROS
- Over 100 hours of gameplay with the expansion
- Completely remastered + new graphics engine
- Good story with nice NPCs
- Huge world that feels alive
- Beautiful environments
- Excellent voice acting
- Nice humor
- So many items and quests
- Lost of skills to specialize and customize your character
- Almost bug free

CONS
- Clunky combat but more fluid than the original
- Capped at 30FPS (they got a patch out for that)

Anyways, it's all a matters of taste and opinion but it's been a while since I had that much fun with a game.

I've been eying this game for a long time - and due to the mixed reviews I can't bring myself to the price of admission as well as sacrificing a free weekend to flesh it out when there are a lot of other games already in my queue.

That being said, you guys have convinced me enough to have this game on my list in the near future. As all things in PC gaming - there comes a time of complete "crap" and games like these hopefully "fill the void" until the next best thing.

Is this a standalone?

Technically yes - Think of "Game of the year edition", which means that it's the original game with a ton of extras thrown in and some original stuff redone.

If you played The Witcher - that game did the same thing with "Enhanced Edition", which essentially was the core game with tons of re-balancing - new quests - and lot of polish.
