Divinity Original Sin 2 just launched. Anyone tried it yet?

When I played the first one, I started it and couldn't put it down. I played through it several times before moving on (long before the EE was released) and I was pretty happy to see this being made but I lost track of it a while back.

Just wondering if anyone has tried it and how it compares to the first game.

I hope this means they can start on the console versions soon, we played through the EE three times as couch co-op.

I couldn't ever do local co-op. After playing through the main game with keyboard and mouse, I couldn't handle playing with a controller. It was just too awkward when maneuvering around towns and trying to steal things.

It's excellent. Instantly familiar with a multitude of improvements over DOS. I'm still only a few hours in but there's a lot to like here. It feels like they've taken DOS and turned everything "up to eleven", so to speak. I did try using a controller as well and it's actually not bad, but I'll be sticking to mouse and keyboard.

Game runs around 45fps at 4K on Ultra settings (GTX1080, i7 7700). I dropped it to 1080 and was getting around 140fps. Feels highly polished thus far, zero performance issues.

I just started playing it today. Graphically it's improved, and everything is voice acted too. Combat is the same turn based system as before. You can play as one of a few predesigned characters with a backstory (if you don't chose to be one, you can add them to your party by meeting them in game).

Things look promising so far.

We didn't really have any problems there, my GF stole everything that wasn't nailed down. I just had to make sure my characters were well away from the thieving.

Did they actually make crafting useful this time? I remember the first game had a fairly extensive crafting feature that was completely useless considering the weapons and armor you'd find out exploring was vastly superior to anything you could craft.

I just finished another playthrough, and that is not completely true. There is not a bow in the game that even comes close to a crafted bow (you can get literally 3x damage from a crafted bow!), same goes for crafted 2h weapons (about double damage of any 2h weapon in game). Crafting armor is not really worth it with a few exceptions, but you definitely want to use crafting to upgrade the armor find or buy. Staves and wands are useless to craft or upgrade. By midgame you should be crafting large resist potions and upgrading all your healing potions to large ones.

Yeah, the original game had OP crafting for weapons and also the upgrade for armor was hugely beneficial by providing significant movement range buffs. Not sure if it first released that way though, also I played through Act 1 of the EE last year so perhaps my memory of the non-EE version is wrong but DOS1 definitely had useful crafting.

I kickstarted this so should be getting a key, should I play the first game first? Hadn't gotten around to it yet. Hm steam or GOG... first is on Steam so maybe there if you import chars from 1 to 2?

I doubt that you will import characters, DOS 2 is set more than a thousand years after DOS 1.

Is this the EE or the classic? I never played the EE and I read that they buffed some of the crafted items, but the general consensus (when I asked on the Steam discussions) was that crafted items were still years behind anything you could find.

Bummer they haven't released a Linux version of this, I would buy it in second. I do have DOS:EE however.

Well that didn't take long, I'm a few hours in... and I'm completely stuck. I'm getting wrecked in fights with enemies my level (only level 3, no less!). Heh, Tactician mode seems a little harder this time around... you can't just charm, knockdown, or light everyone on fire on your first turn to win like you could in DOS1. Interesting.

Can you at least use a Rogue or spells to sneak up to enemies or set up fights using the environment around you? I loved having my rogue go invisible and sneak up behind enemies while the rest of my party engaged for the free sneak attacks.

You don't have to, but it's incredibly fun.

I think you're missing my question - I'm asking in terms of things like plot whether it matters.

For example, seems to me with The Elder Scrolls RPGs, there's not a need to play an earlier one before a later game. Just jump in to the later one. Same for the Dragon Age series.

But other series, it's better to play in sequence.

There is almost no reason to play the 1st, to enjoy the 2nd. They are set in different centuries, and don't really tie in together at all, other than some history. If you like it enough, you might be interested in playing the 1st too, but it isn't required at all.

I remember the first game, and how you really had to follow the quests in a fairly strict order in the first 6-8 levels, or it was lots of pain, so I went with Classic mode to start. It does appear, even in Classic mode, the game is pretty punishing if you fight at a lower level than the AI. They either have better gear, or more numbers, either way, it can be rough.

What I do really like, however, is the lack of hand holding. For most quests, unless they mark your map for you (in dialog), you have to figure out where to go, and what to do, based on the dialog (noted in log for some help). This is how RPG's used to be.

I said you don't have to, but if you want specifics, this game is set 1,000 years after the events of the first game. I've heard from people that there's mention of the first game in books, but you don't need to know what happened to enjoy the second. They are two separate games set in the same world.

That was definitely not our experience, we mostly used crafted & improved weapons and armor.
