Played and finished Divinity II recently so I'll probably grab this after it's been out for a bit. I'd prefer to get a lot of the bugs patched before I start.
Be warned though, there is little in common between the old Divinity games and this one. Supposedly the company wanted to make Divinity turn based like this one, but their publishers said "oh no you ain't! nobody likes turn based" so they had to do them twitchy action.

They then turned to kickstarter to see if it was true that there was no market for turn based, and they were blown up by support, so they made the game they always wanted to make, group and turn based, it's a totally different game than Divinity 1 or 2.

And it is amazing.

I just got to the first town and am liking it so far.

The only thing I don't get, is when I level up, I can't raise skills higher than 1? Any point in getting Witchcraft on a Wizard (can the Wizard then use Witchcraft spells)?
?

Skills higher than 1 cost more than one point. 2 costs 2, 3 I'm assuming costs 3, etc.

Maybe give everyone sneaking, or save the points you can't spend in your class skills for later?

Oh, and does anyone know if when reading books and being granted crafting recipes - is that for all characters, or only the one that read the book? Do you have to be careful and have a melee character read the book to craft plate?

BTW - There is a full color PDF manual that comes with the game and explains a lot of the mechanics. If you got the game on Steam go to your library and right click on the Divinity: Original Sin entry and choose Manual to see it.

maybe i need to RTFM, but in my limited play of the beta, i could not figure out how to split out an inventory item. i had 8 health bottles in one character's inventory and i could not figure out how to send half or any number to the other character. i could drag and drop all 8, but then im back where i started with all of them in one character. is it possible to split out something like this?

It's really a fantastic game.

Yes, you can use any spells on any class, as long as you have the requisite skills.

Everyone can at least attempt to sneak (just hit "c" for each character), but the more points in dexterity and related skills, the higher your chances of succeeding.

As of now, recipes aren't learned or stored. They may patch this later, but I like the fact that you need to remember it yourself (write it down somewhere or just google it later if you can't be bothered) if you want to get rid of the book. Otherwise, hang on to the books! I use my battlemage as my "main," so he picks everything up and reads it, but my wayfarer is the crafter, so she's the one that makes everything. But you can pass anything between characters, so it's not an issue.

Did I mention that the game is fantastic?

Just got this game, only finished the tutorial but I like the style, basically D&D on your PC. I wish you could run multiplayer with up to 4 players though rather than 2.

Larian Studio's have already said that it is possible, but they will leave it to the modding community to do implement it.

Indeed. It's amazing what you can do in terms of out-of-the-box thinking that most games just don't address (focusing instead on graphics or combat mechanics). For example, need a poison arrow, but can't afford one? If you have a tooth, a knife, and a branch, you don't need gold. There are tons of random crafting ideas like that that really make this game scream ROLE PLAYING GAME more than most that call themselves that. Very much looking forward to see what the community does with the developer's kit...

I'm really excited to start this one. I move in two days and won't have internet for a week and a half. Going to play this during that time.

I haven't started yet, just looked at character creation, but I was thinking Knight and Witch or Fighter and Witch. Was worried I might want some heals though.

Keep in mind that you can really make whatever classes you want, even from the start. You can change out the default spells, or choose a witch but subtract a point in one talent for a point in hydromancer (so you can add minor heal).

Cleric is usually OP and needed for heals/undead I think, but I would leave that role up to one of the two mercs you hire for your 4 man party so I can focus on other things with the two controllable characters.

I know in previous RPGs, if there is one character I want to control, its the mage. Lots of one use, high situation spells. AI doesn't do it well. Meat shield AI can run okay, so long as I can prompt them to run interference for the mage when needed.

I started with battlemage (he can tank until I get a cleric or fighter/knight) and a wayfarer, which is basically a ranger than can heal.

I never liked ranger or assassin types. I like fighter or tanks most, then necromancers or mages. But the need for heals usually makes me prioritize a cleric after the tank.

If you guys haven't done so already, get the Pet Pal trait that lets you talk to animals. Good comedy and I already found a quest.

Excellent game so far.

You control all the characters, even the companions that join you, just tested it out.

Excuse me for asking perhaps the question that someone will say 'LMGTFY' but is this turn-based ala Hero Quest/Fire Emblem (can't think of many this morning) or more like Baldur's Gate, slow'ish real-time with a round-based system behind the scenes and time to pause, issue orders and see what happens next?

I'm interested and might have to save up some holiday time so I can sit down and give it some justice, if it's the right kind for me.

Just spent another several hours in game. It's really something incredible they've accomplished here. Amazingly deep experience. Really feels like pen-and-paper D&D. I haven't felt this way about an RPG in ages...it's like a MUD with graphics (pretty good ones too).

Got about 16 hours played so far, but restarted because I didn't like my Ranger.

The manual is shit. This is a true Divinity game - the only way to figure things out, is to fail and learn them. Old school gamers thought this is gaming; while younger players are crying foul.

You can easily run into a fight you have no chance of winning, unlike Skyrim/etc where content is leveled to you.

The payoff is great though. I see so many 'how do I get past the rope' forum posts, and I wondered that too, until I thought about it, and now I'm like 'Doh!'.

Best game I've played all year, and best RPG I've played in a long time.

It's turned based like the Fallout 1/2 games or the new Shadowrun. Each character has action points and the number of points you have is defined by many variables. It's nicely done and the spell effects look nice.
