don't know if this will help you solve the problem but did you try to clean the registry first? Maybe there's something left in the registry.

to clean it basically you go to run and type regedit

Make sure you have a back up before you do this.

i installed Divx 5 and my setup is just like yours.
gf3 using 23.12 drivers on winxp pro

i can watch divx movies fine in media player 8.

goto your Sound and Multimedia Properties, find the Video Codecs, then it should list the Divx codex. Double click and check if it shows that it is installed and functioning properly.

Grafinator - I didn't find the Sound and Multimedia Properties on my computer - not by that name at least - I am using xp so I will need some more exact instructions.

as for the divx player DaiShan gave me - it's nice but there are still some movies that doesn't play - I suspect that they are divx 5 or somthing similar.

For at least divx3 and divx4 you cant play uncomplete movies unless you virtual dub them and that might not even work.

To get the codecs you must download the codecs from www.divx.com

if nothing else works then just reinstall windows.

Are the movies you are trying to play in avi format? and not play viedo at all just sound? if so you may have an ATI encoded movie using ati's own codec. if so then you have a vage shot at installing their codec but be wared some times it works, sometimes it doesent, and sometimes it crashes your system. you have to try and find it on ati's site cause i don't rember what it is called. is windows media player giving you a codec missing error or not found error? lik everyone else here so far i have had no trouble with divix 4 or 5 playing throuh media player. maybe like the last guy sugested.. it might be time for a reinstall.

I am not going to reinstall windows over this problem.
the spesific file that works only with divx 5 (with problems as I have mantioned) is *.avi.

Have you tried BSPlay?

BSPlay is a video player. So far it has played everything I have thrown at it. Most importantly it handled my files that gave WM8 trouble although tinkering with the configuration may be necessary in some cases. It's worth a shot anyway.

Start > Control Panel > Sound and Audio Devices > Hardware Tab > Video Codecs (Couble Click) > Properties Tab >

Divx 5.0 codec should be listed

Ok, this is what I would do in your situation:

1. Download DivX 3.11 alpha - > Install it (you have to run the applicaton "Run me first!" after you've installed it)
2. Download DivX 5.0 - > Install it.
3. If some of your files still won't play it's possible that they are corrupt. Download DivFix and you should be able to fix the files.
4. If this doesn's work - > Format c:, reinstall Windows

m... they are not currupt - they run fine on power dvd for example but not on media player...

an another somehow related question:
I tried to burn that file (about 600mb) as a vcd using nero.
all went fine (the encoding process took about an hour on my machine) but the file turn out to be 1.2gb and the program didn't cut it in half so I could fit it into 2 cd's.

I would like to watch it on my regular dvd (it can read vcd) but I need a way to do that - any ideas?

The best conversion bundle I've found for VCD and SVCD is DVD2SVCD

It requires a copy of Cinema Craft Encoder which is pricey but there are demo versions (that I think put a watermark logo in the corner of the encoded video) check this page.

I believe the latest versions of the DVD2SVCD package also support TMPGenc (also commercial software but with a 30 day trial).

The beauty of this package is that it automates the conversion of VOBs to SVCD quite nicely and will automatically split the files across however many CDRs are required. There are a lot of settings that can be changed but you can get pretty good results using the defaults. Doom9.org has some good info on this package as well as VCD and SVCD conversions using other software.

Hope this helps,
