None of that is "spin" as far as I can tell. If you think it is, tell me more precisely why ?

Having a different opinion than someone else, isn't "spin" is it ?

Well, you almost had a point, but then I came along. I have listened to every Country song ever written. It all sucks.

who cares?

some people like country some do not. some like that rap etc.

as for the dixie chicks? they said something to get in good with the fans (in germany it think) and suffered backlash here in teh US. now they can't make a living as country singers so had to change there style.

while i think it was dumb to say what they said i wish them luck in whatever they are trying.

I was joking of course, but I think this is interesting. To me Johnny Cash isn't even Country, although I guess technically he's a part of that genre. He seems more like American folk music, in that his songs are so nationally universal in appeal that they qualify as simply "American" music.

I've heard similar arguments from people who don't want to say they like any "County" music. They'll try to re-classify it as some other genre, mainly because they dislike so much of it or the culture surrounding it, and the same goes for other types of music as well. I'm not a big fan of country music, but so many of my friends, students, and family like it that I hear quite a bit of it and I've like some of the songs. It doesn't make me a country music fan, I just like what I like regardless of genre.

I appreciate talent regardless of the category. That doesn't necessarily mean I'll like their songs, but when I hear someone say something like, "the Dixie Chicks can't sing", that just sounds ridiculous to me. Of course they can sing and they're talented musicians. You may not like their songs, but you'd have to be tone deaf to think there's anything wrong with their singing or playing abilities.

If I like a song, I don't care who's singing it or what genre it is. I've found songs I like in everything from Bluegrass to Heavy Metal to Classical. I've probably found the fewest songs I like in Rap and Jazz, but I can still appreciate the talent of many of the performers in those genres even though the resulting songs aren't necessarily what I like.

Sorry mate, their cover was one of the worst covers of any song I have ever heard IMO. I hate it when they get into that "AH ahhhhhhh" in between the breaks...*shudders*. Smashing Pumpkins did a MUCH better cover of Landslide, a respectable tribute to Fleetwood Mac.

lol... I was thinking the same thing. I think Billy Corgan is a whiny little bitch, but he sounds better than the Dixie Chix.

Really dislike most country music. Started listening to DC after they crapped on the administration. Now I have all their albums, and listen to some of their stuff regularly. I wouldn't say I love their music, but I'll support ANYONE who calls president on his utter stupidity.

I can live with that quite happily. As long as I support those who oppose, I'm doing the best I can do.

I'm not really a DC fan, but I like the fact that they stood up against what they saw as a wrong, instead of "rolling over" and taking the course of "My country, right or wrong", like so many other country musicians have. I support their right to dissent, and their music isn't bad. Maybe not exactly to my taste, but still not bad...Maybe I'll buy the new album, just to show support.

They didn't STAND UP for anything.

they took a cheap shot at the president and it jumped back and bit them in the ass.

they cannot apologize because it will make them look weak. so, they struggle with record sales in the USA, cut some tour dates because the tickets wont sell and now they are pushing their tours in other countries where they can do the 'hate the administration' to a like minded audience.

I am not a fan of their music, but that is because I am just not a fan of their music.

The album was #1 for three weeks - that's marvelous for a country act, on a pop and rap dominated chart. They've sold over a million copies in only 3 weeks. Not only that - but according to their website - more dates were just added to their tour roster.

Sounds like you've been feeding off the same negativity Hannity and O'Reily have been spewing, who still find time to talk about the Dixie Chicks everyday (providing them with more exposure than they could ever want, I might add).

You can spin it how you want, but the infamous comment:
"Just so you know, we're ashamed the President of the United States is from Texas."
and this one:
" June 2006 Emily Robison commented to the Telegraph in the UK on the exploitation of the war in Iraq found in many country music videos, "A lot of pandering started going on, and you'd see soldiers and the American flag in every video," Robison said. "It became a sickening display of ultra-patriotism." Maines continued, "The entire country may disagree with me, but I don't understand the necessity for patriotism. Why do you have to be a patriot? About what? This land is our land? Why? You can like where you live and like your life, but as for loving the whole country ... I don't see why people care about patriotism."

were anti-war comments. Hell, I'm not a Texan, and I'M ashamed that Dubya is from Texas...
Whether you like them for it or not, America has always stood for freedom of speech, and deriding someone who has a different opinion than the popular one sounds kind of un-American

Their cover of Landslide is totally irrelevant. It sounded just like the original.

But I do think their latest single is pretty good.

I see nothing wrong wiht this. They're selling well in large metropolitain areas, and in Canada. They have a new base (I'd even wager to say a more affluent base also), and they're selling to them. They're doing just great for being at the "lowest point of their career" (as some say).

I agree... however... if someone choose to use their fame to make a political statement, they become fair game to those who choose to boycott them if they don't agree.

If she was sitting in her living room and made those statements, it would be one thing. But she made her judgements and voiced her opinion with her preformer hat on. That opened her up to have everyone who disagrees with those statements to spend their money elsewhere.

They were the ones who brought their profession into this... how in the world could they use their profession to invoke freedom of speech and not expect ppl to do the same?

I have never bought their music because I dont like their music. Their political stance has nothing to do with my buying habits, but I certainly can see both sides of this coin.

So it is un-american to dislike someone or their opinion?

I am afraid you are mixed up. Just as they are free to say what they said...americans are free to not buy their music or ridicule them for those comments.

Wait... sorry, I don't get it. how is this a good thing? they are not doing great.

their ticket sales are down, their music is being pulled off the radio stations and they are struggling in several markets. they are forced to work harder in other countries because they are failing in this one.

is this an 'always look on the bright side of life' moment?

To be honest, I really don't care. I did not care about them before this, and this had not made me care about them any more or any less. I am just curious and amused at some of the posts in this thread.
