Since when is being a Radio DJ a protected free speech arena? Broke the rule, got fired, good for the boss and company following up on its stance.

It's neat how their album is now #2 on the Billboard charts. It was at #3 a month ago.

I have to commend the Conservatives on doing a strikingly good job at boycotting the Dixie Chicks.

Heh. Maybe with the rednecks and white trash sitting out DC concerts, the other people decided it's safe to go?

It is amusing to watch the media try to outpatriot each other with these Bush lovefests. Left-wing bias my @ss.

Yes, the flag waving uber-patriots can all feel smug now that they've crushed another example of vocal dissent. Can't have musicians and actors (or I guess DJs in this case) going around speaking their mind now, can we?

They can speak out all they want. It's their right and I would defend it to my death. My problem with most of these celebrity types that spoke out against the war is that they think they can do so withouth retribution by people that disagree with them. Speak out all you want, but when people don't like what you say and don't go to your movies, buy your albums, etc....don't cry about it. It's just as much their right to boycott you as it is your right to speak out.

Where do you see Dixie Chicks crying about it ? Are they begging ultra conservatives to attend their concerts or buy their albums ?

They are sold out on almost every tour of mid west and east this summer.

They must be laughing their butts off on "conservative" publicity that gave them a rise from #3 to #2.

They can dissent all they want. Like one famous person once said, I'll die for their right to.

But since when are they protected from retribution?

If a worker of mine wears a swastika to work, can I not throw him out of my company? What they are doing is protected by free speech. But their at-will employment agreement with me supersedes those rights. No different than what happened here. They made an unpopular stance. They were told to stop playing their music. They did not, they were fired, good for them.

Its just plain ignorant to equate a "reverse boycott" (by the suppliers rather than the customers) with some vast right wing consipiracy, or by any way, shape or form having their rights infringed upon.

Call me whatever you want, but I'm intelligent enough to understand the difference between "crushing dissent" and operating fully within both the legal and reasonable bounds of the law. You only see it as "The vast right wingers coming to stamp out any and all that speak against them".

Ditto ^

Great minds think alike Can't say that for the "hey you are a flag-waving fascist" crowd. They can only call names, and can't defend their inflammatory comments or arguments in a logical manner.

Oh various interviews I've seen. Articles I've read. They were complaining of "unfair treatment because of their views." It's like they don't realize that people don't have to give them a free ride just because they are celebrities.

Usually the only people ever obsessed with what celebrities say are CONSERVATIVES.

Just more fuel for their angers.

Usually most liberals and most moderates never show any interest in what celebrities say.

that's because a lot of conservatives have low self esteem and p***s-envy complex
while most liberals are a bunch of snubbish SOB who think they're smarter than they really are...

I think the point here is this: If you don't agree with the Dixie Chicks (or whomever) that's fine. This country is built on the concept of free speech & open criticism of our government. The problem is that the conservatives in this country seem to think it's OK to take things beyond a simple "we agree to disagree." They launch protests, they burn books/CD's/whatever in the streets, they threaten the people in question with physical violence and vandalize their homes. They take steps to harm the individuals financially. They say out one side of their mouths, "Free speech is fine and dandy" and out the other side, "... but there will be consequences."

All of this does nothing but serve to chill free speech. Pretty soon, people are afraid to speak out, or disagree with popular opinion. Where do you draw the line with this "retribution"? What if someone gets shot over a disagreement like this? Is that OK?

Bottom line: if you disagree with someone, fine. Have your little argument with them. Refuse to buy their CD. Whatever. Get on with your life. Remember, free speech is only truly free when people feel able to speak their mind without being threatened...
