I personally think it was a decent album but the Grammy voters totally sold out in the name of making a political statement.

Plus, I totally hate Natalie Maines for being absolutely fug and louder than the loudest redneck.

Are the Grammys even relevant anymore? Have they EVER been a reflection of the thoughts of consumers?

Regardless, should that be a factor in them winning so many awards?

No it shouldn't, but you naturally assume that's why they won.

Grammy's have never been relevant anyways. Grammy's are just a way to give a pat on the back to the top 40 crap you hear on the radio. It's just a way of saying one band was more popular than another. If you thought it was ever about anything more, then you are sorely mistaken.

The Grammys have never been purely about musical talent. If you look at it from the standpoint of
commercial success, popularity with critics, cultural zeitgeist, artistic bravery, etc,
it might make sense for the Dixie Chicks to win so many.

Well, it certainly wasn't because they had a better album than anyone else sales-wise. And it wasn't because the album was well-reviewed. It wasn't because they had to move their tour to Canada because they weren't selling tickets in the U.S. It wasn't because radio stations played their songs.

So what reason could it be? It was because they made a strong and polarizing political statement and the industry (Including the Grammys) took clear sides.

I thought that was the Dixie Chicks' lead singer.

Ok, I can see how it would be a relevant win if they awarded Grammys for political bravery. But it should be about the music, not about some fat redneck chick's political opinions.

only watched the first 5 mins of the grammys when the Police performed, other than that, I never watch these awards or care. They never have the same views as me on what the best music or movies or even tv shows are for the year before.

Don't know and don't really care. I Didn't watch the Grammys, and I certainly haven't bought any of their albums to know.

That's an interesting theory because the best-selling albums aren't always the most-awarded...

The first time I heard about this year Grammy was on last night is a drive to work this morning. It shows how much I care about that show.

Unless you get your music reviews from Guns and Ammo, I think it was. Objectively speaking there is hardly a weak song on the whole album.

That's wierd, because I have this vivid recollection of seeing them play in a nearly sold out Rose Garden in Portland. Bizarre.

Sounds like you're referring to the faux-protests at Clear Channel owned country stations. Which I'm sure were completely unrelated to the fact that Clear Channel donated big bucks to both bush campaigns. Dixie Chicks got plenty of airplay on non-country stations around here.

Actually, the Grammys have historically been quite averse to awarding politically controversial musicians (although thinking bush sucks is hardly controversial anymore). Don't let the fact that the Grammys have historically sucked confuse you on this point.

In Europe, both singles from their Taking the Long Way were well received by country radio, remaining on the European Country Charts for more than 20 weeks each: "Not Ready To Make Nice" peaked at #13 and "Everybody Knows" at #11.[17]

The group's Accidents & Accusations Tour began in July 2006. Ticket sales were strong in Canada and in some Northeastern markets, but notably weak in other areas. A number of shows were cancelled or relocated to smaller venues due to poor sales, and in Houston, Texas, tickets never even went on sale when local radio stations refused to accept advertising for the event [18]. In August, a re-routed tour schedule was announced with a greater emphasis on Canadian dates, where Taking the Long Way had gone five-times-platinum.

From Wikipedia.org

So why are the American Grammys awarding album performance in Canada? Don't they have the Juno Awards for that?

And as far as radio airplay, sure you probably heard it in Portland but not on a Country Music station. They clearly said "****** you" to their country fans and began getting their only airplay on prog-rock and indie stations:

"I'd rather have a smaller following of really cool people who get it, who will grow with us as we grow and are fans for life, than people that have us in their five-disc changer with Reba McEntire and Toby Keith. We don't want those kinds of fans. They limit what you can do."
