Never thought of getting a cardiologist though not sure how easy that is when you don't actually have problems. Can I just ask my doctor to be referred to one? How does that work?

Maybe I'm just being paranoid too, but I just like the idea of at very least being more aware of how I'm doing in that department rather than be blind and assume I'm ok.

The first step is getting my nutrition in better check, but like I said it's just hard to know what changes to even make when all the information I read/watch differs.

For a while I've been cutting back on the obviously bad stuff like processed foods, pop, junk food etc (still have it and could afford to reduce even more mind you) but even if I cut that stuff out 100% I feel I could do even better if I could just figure out 100% what's healthy and what's not but there's just so much conflicting information.
just ask your doctor for a referral.

45 bpm? Is your heart a diesel? lol. That seems really low isin't it? Or is mine high? I just tested now and I'm at 70.

It's better than like 150bpm when I did weed though... Maybe that is proof enough that my heart is healthy if that didn't kill me. lol.
I can't find a good answer. Started biking in '93ish and have checked it since then. 38 was the lowest, iirc.

The low rate and a chest xray was the reason for the echo. Normal.

Science doesn't seem to have a good reason/explanation for athlete's heart and low rates. My guess is efficiency and biology. Spin bike, 1 min in and I'm at 110. Slow climb from there.

you mean an echo-cardiogram?

That is just an ultrasound of your heart. They may do the bubble test. I had that done and the total test time was about 30 minutes.
I guess....gel, scanner. The 1st thing she said was that I didn't have an enlarged heart. The other was that there was a 67%(?) evacuation rate. If I'm at 45bpm, shouldn't it be higher? Or is my heart larger due to exercise and the % means little?

See the GP in Nov.

Hey, the abdominal aorta is good. Dad/Grand...bad days.

Pretty sure I'm living to 100....condolences, Losers.

There was a guy in the same room as my dad who was exactly 100 who was recovering from getting a pace maker. He did not seem to be doing that great though, trouble breathing and stuff, but still incredible he made it that long. Who knows though, he might outlive the pace maker's warranty.

But yeah I think I will book an appointment with my Dr and ask about tests again, if he refuses I'll asked to see if I can be referred. Just want to make sure I'm on the right path heart health wise given it runs in the family, and if not then I can fix it before it gets bad.

Like I said. I already saw a doctor and he did nothing. Doctors won't do any testing unless you are already sick. It's too late at that point. Doctors now days are reactive not proactive. That, and they'll just put you on pills instead of working with you to prevent/fix any issues.

Either way I should be living a healthy life style anyway, but still good to make sure I'm actually on track. With nutrition being more complicated than rocket science, it's easy to THINK you're eating healthy and then realize that something you're doing is not healthy. Eggs are a good example, some people say the middle part is bad, some say it's good. Which is it? Who knows. All I can do is eat it in moderation and hope I'm safe.

CAC test is the best bet but obviously not DIYable. I think even any at home test would only start showing results when it's too late.

I feel a lot of heart related problems today (which is one of leading cause of death) could be prevented if early testing was actually done. They do it for cancer (mamograms for women, prostate check for men etc) not sure why they don't for heart.
if you saw a cardiologist and they did nothing you have shit for a cardiologist!!
I have had a cardiologist going on 30 + years and regasrdless of if I think I need it ot not he checks my heart once a year!!

Trust me when I msay -- it is better to see a cardiologist when nothing is going on, than to wait until it is too late!!

Good move Squirrel!! Somethings you really do need to professional.......DIY is all well and good, but when it comes to something as important as your heart.... good luck!!

Like I said though, highly doubt my doctor will do anything. Was hoping for some science based answers like "test blood pressure before and after workout and if numbers are in a certain range your good" or something to that extent.

I did end up buying a BP monitor, figured I can at least track that more. I never really paid attention to the numbers when I do go to doc or give blood, so may as well start tracking them. I don't even know if my doctor tracks it. The nurse checks it, tells me it's ok, and moves on. I doubt it gets recorded. I don't think BP tells the whole story though but it's something I guess.

I doubt the doctor would even refer you if the basic blood tests/ECG checks out and you are otherwise healthy. Even if you do it will probably be like 4-6 months wait. I got referred to a gastroenterologist for stomach problems and its like "we'll call you in 4 months".

Times like this where I wish I can just pay rather than get the "free" healthcare.

Yeah that's why I want to know of some DIY stuff, for ECG etc. Like there's got to be some resources out there for basic at home tests one can do. Not meant to replace a doctor or anything but it at least gives you something to work with to find out if you should take more serious action. Since even that they won't send you on unless there is a problem. I do wish we at least have option to pay for additional tests. Would be nice to get blood work done once a year for example, so that it's on file to look for any trends etc.

But yeah at least with the free health are we don't need to go bankrupt if we get sick, but downside is less options for preventative maintenance as they will only offer bare minimum care on as needed bassis.

To be fair, the best thing you can do is just regular exercise. Another option is to get an Apple Watch to monitor your heartbeat. There's articles that say it actually picked up irregular heartbeat for people.

Canada can definitely learn from other countries in operating health care. South Korea also has universal health care and they are way better. Hearing from my gf and her friends you can easily get regular checkups and if you need you can usually see a specialist within a few days. They were surprised at how difficult it is to even see a family doctor here.

I don't see why your doctor can't give you a referral if you have cardiac concerns. It doesn't cost him anything and it would help ease your mind.

My doctor referred me to a cardiologist because my congenital heart defect was a little beyond his expertise. It was not a criticism of my doctor. It was just a matter of getting an opinion from a specialist.

Yeah still going to ask. I actually need to book an appointment some time because I've have a really annoying ringing sound in my ear for the past few months. I thought it was because of wax build up which I got removed by my naturopath. (faster to get appointment with) but it never went away. Hopefully I don't have damage... But while I'm there I'll mention my concerns about getting my heart health checked. I find if I go with a real medical issue it can sometimes prompt at least some kind of testing or what not as some times can sometimes be related.

As a side note I bought a blood pressure monitor. Never really paid attention to my blood pressure and just took the assumption that any time it gets tested (doctor visit, donating blood etc) if it was out of whack they'd probably tell me. I'm never in a position to write down the numbers so I quickly forget. By having one at home I can track it better.

My BP is actually not that great.... so I guess I need to work on that. I hover around 120 over 83ish with a 70bpm. I think the 120 is ok but that 83 is very high. Should be what, like 70? I think more cardio might be able to bring that down though right? That's one thing I need to add more in my workout regime.

If your blood pressure measurement is accurate (you can get it done for free in most drugstores) then yours is pretty normal.

Hmmm good to know, figured it was a little high as on one chart I looked at the cut off was 80 for the lower number and anything higher meant you should try to lower it.
