What? So for a director to be held in high esteem he has to only be liked by cult movie fanatics and non-parents? :|

I guess my taste just isn't as refined.

Pulp Fiction is a better movie but I think Django Unleashed is the best movie I have seen this year. I thought it was awesome beginning to end. Great performances by everyone in the movie.

Funny how Spike lee is pissed. I guess he thinks only black people can direct black people to use the N word.

lol

Spike 'I haven't made a decent movie since Inside Man' Lee said:
I can't speak on it 'cause I'm not gonna see it,
All I'm going to say is that it's disrespectful to my ancestors.

I saw an 1125 showing last night and didn't get home until just before 3. Had to be at work by 6. It was worth it.

This movie had much more laughs than any other Tarantino movie. There were parts that felt so cool, very similar to Desperado or From Dusk Til Dawn. It felt like it had similar roots as Kill Bill but went in a completely different direction.

Some of the editing was weird, and I think some of the excess could have been trimmed to make it tighter. My biggest complaint would be that the movie seemed to waffle too long between comedy, gory action and drama. It was sort of jarring having ultra violent scenes spread so far apart, almost like you forgot there was action in the movie.

I have plans to see it again in a few days, I'm curious to see if the flaws smooth out with subsequent viewings.

FUBU

Honestly, this movie looks shit. Tarrentino was sick awhile back. I think the Kill Bills were his last good ones. Though the best film he had anything to do with he didn't even direct... True Romance.

My review posted in the "main thread" a few weeks ago:

SPOILERS WARNING!

Keeping in mind that Inglorious Bastards was a 10.0/10.0 for me, I had high expectations for the return of Christoph Waltz in another Quentin Tarantino film and I was not disappointed. From the Tarantino-style "gore" to Samuel L. Jackson to the humor to the soundtrack...Django Unchained easily fits in my TOP 5 films of 2012. I found myself laughing and clapping many times. Highly recommended!

A few additional impressions will be listed below but with spoiler tags:

-Underneath the surface, I believe Tarantino offers us a commentary on both contemporary and historical white-black and black-black relations. In regards to the latter, think "oreo" vs. not. This is especially emphasized in the relationship between the characters played by Foxx and Jackson.
-While Bastards was a fun revenge epic pitting a group of Jewish gorilla fighters against Hitler himself, Django takes equal liberty in pitting the black man against his slave owner.
-With his typical Tarantino "gore" he offers audiences perhaps one of the most brutal, realistic and sad depiction of mid-19th Century southern slavery ever put on film.
-More subtly, Tarantino also offers audiences a historical and contemporary commentary on "civilized" European versus "uncivilized" American attitudes.
-Tarantino officially has a fetish for the German language.
-Both the first and second "big house" gun battles are some of the best western-style gun battles ever put on film. The rap music certainly made them feel more bad ass.
-Samuel L. Jackson plays a really good villain.
-Leonardo DiCaprio also plays a really good villain; his seething monologue during the "three dimples" speech is perhaps nomination worthy.
-Tarantino once again proves he can push "celluloid" faster than anyone; Django is only 12 minutes longer than Bastards (165 vs. 153) but both feel like much faster films.
-The soundtrack is brilliant. Hit after hit of scene-appropriate music.

This pretty much sums up my views. While it may have felt faster though, a bit could have been edited out.

I don't see how Spike Lee can honestly find an issue with this movie representing slavery.

Saw this xmas evening, and the theatre was still pretty packed considering most people were going to work on Wed. The movie was good, but not one of his best. Definitely had lots of funny parts, and the acting was pretty superb, especially with the performances from Waltz, Leo, and Samuel... Jamie Foxx wasn't bad either.

I'd def watch this movie again in the theater if the occasion arises.

In my opinion, concluding the movie
after tarantino's character dies, and Django goes free again
would have made for a better ending, however, I'd still give it 9/10 stars

Saw the movie 2 hours ago. I must say, it was AWESOME!

I have no complaints other than my mother threw up after the movie because she couldn't handle the blood and the violence!

Saw it a second time yesterday at 3:00 in a packed theater and thoroughly enjoyed it as much or more!

I saw it a few days ago. Considering it is nearly 3 hours long, I was surprised when it was over - the time flew by. One of the best movies of the year.

For me, the film dragged on. While I did like the story line and plot, there was a lot of extra fluff that slowed the movie down quite a bit for me. In addition, I'd say the soundtrack was distracting and subtracted from the movie itself. While I'm all for novel soundtracks and mixing out-of-time music with certain scenes, I felt like it was predictable and subtracted from the moment. Django was a movie I left feeling confused about. I liked Jamie Foxx and Christopher Waltz performance and relationship throughout the movie, but was significantly underwhelmed by Leonardo DeCaprio. I felt like the whole scene involving him at the house was predictable and drawn out. Honestly, I would see it again, but would have preferred it was only 2h long.

I wonder why Tarantino had to change the Django character from a drifter/gunslinger to a slave-turned-bounty hunter. Franco Nero must be disappointed.

Sam Jackson's character was a great parody of Uncle Ruckus from "The Boondocks".

Just saw it. It was pretty good, but I still think Tarantino is not a great director. He writes damn good scenes, but the movies themselves has massive pacing issues. There were fairly long stretches of Django that I was just bored because it was pretty obvious what was going to happen, and he just drew it out for much MUCH longer than it ever had a right to.

Whoever thinks that those fights were realistic at all needs to have his eyes examined. In no western gunfight did people fly back 30 feet after getting hit by pistol rounds. especially in the scene at the end when he shoots that woman and then she ends up flying backward perpendicularly to how she was shot.

I mean, what the fuck.

Also, half the songs were extremely distracting and its not like they had some amazing timing either. They all happened during travel scenes or in the middle of fight scenes. Not exactly a new style of directing.
