from my experience w/iRiver's mp3 players (i own the H120 and owned the iFp-190) they are simply plug and play... just like a typical usb drive/key... he should be able to plug into any computer and read/write onto it~
in any case,
why not just move the songs (onto his own pc) before updating the firmware? and then move them back... ?

for whatever reason the iRiver doesn't allow the movement of files from the player to the PC (but the other direction is okay obviously). apparently a future firmware update will alleviate this issue. I wasn' sure if there was some way to get around this. They are doing everything they can to stop any form of filesharing - getting pretty rediculous...

Well at some point some version of the firmware made it so that you can't do this. I know 2 people have one of the flashmemory iRivers and they both have this issue.

I have the 895 model and there are 2 firmwares that can be used. The first is the standard firmware that you use with their program which does not allow uploading files from the player. The other firmware has UMS in its name and makes the player appear as a actual usb flash drive in windows and you can use it as such (upload/download/file sort with explorer). The trade off by doing this is they limit you to 96kbs encoding.
Goto the official iriver site and not the regional ones to find the firmwares..
