Dlink router and laptop problem

Using a Dlink wireles router and a dlink pc card and wpa psk. Everytime I restart the laptop i have to "rescan" and log onto the network. Is this normal? Sometimes I have to rescan 2-3 times before I connect. Is there any way I can set it to reconnect automatically every time I boot up? My desktop which is connected to the router via a CAT 5 cable connects automaticaly at every boot up.

Yes, this is normal. The way D-Links (and some other wireless things, esp the built in ones) work is that they scan and pick up the strongest signal every time.

Being wired in is a bit different of course - you don't have a choice of routers then, eh?

No choice of router. Have a DLINK and a DLINK PC card for laptop

I don't know what kind of WiFi utility you have installed as they vary greatly as to how they connect. Assuming you are using a Windows utility and you have configured your network properly then Windows will attempt to connect to that network before all others. This is typically based on SSID and MAC address.

As for your connection problems do you have any 2.4Ghz phones or microwave ovens? Since these operate in the same frequency range as wireless networks they can cause interference. I have a 2.4Ghz phone in my house and my laptops were having problems connecting to my router. Once I boosted the transmit power of the router the laptops had no problem "seeing" it over all of the other traffic.

Got it. Stopped using WPA PSK and started using WEP
