You appear to be making the (wrong) assumption that you must use DLSS with RT.
The subject of the thread is Ray Reconstruction, and right now the feature requires DLSS and Path Tracing to be enabled. (at least when using the game menu)

I haven’t tried the latest CP2077 update
This thread is exclusively about the latest CP 2077 update and the marketed combination of Path Tracing + DLSS + RR.

The new tech improves overall lighting accuracy a great deal, but in it's current form comes with major IQ compromises:
  • texture detail loss (documented above)
  • apparent disabled subsurface scattering (see discussion here)
  • ghosting (documented in this thread and OP video)
  • strange shadow effects on some surfaces (see the tree in my other post, keep in mind the other SS without strong shadows is also using Path Tracing)
I've also seen people complaining that RR turns NPCs into an oily painting mess, but I'd rather not post screenshots I cannot trust, if they're true we'll see video footage from a youtuber anyway.

1080p->4K - "Huh, I guess it looks a bit sharper if I look closely"
I agreed with your first two "descriptions" but this is definitely still "holy shit, it's so much clearer!" territory. Going from 1080p to 4k, even on a 27" monitor, is a huge definition upgrade, comparable to wearing your eyesight glasses for the first time. Even 1080p -> 1440p is a solid upgrade I would recommend to anyone using a desktop display.

The only upgrades from 1080p that present major diminishing returns are the small laptop screens in the 12"-14" territory. When I moved from 13" 1080p to 14" 1800p (2800x1800px), the most beneficial upgrades were the different aspect ratio, 90Hz refresh, and the brightness and color gamut improvements. The resolution was more than fine on the 13", to the point where only fonts benefited from higher PPI.

With that said, I do agree that 8K is much more of a niche upgrade than 4k was when it first appeared. The folks using TVs instead of monitors may disagree, but that does not change the optics of the situation.

Looks great in CB 2077 (vid is available, watch on YT link)
The lighing looks great, the problems people are having are related to other IQ issues. Here's an example based on the video you posted. I went to the exact location as the one presented at 1:00 and took a screenshot (bridge on the SW corner of Heywood Wellsprings). Unfortunately I have a 6800XT, so we'll need to rely on the video footage for a comparison with RR enabled. My screen shot was done using High settings, no upscaling, Path Tracing enabled.

First, let's address the elephant in the room: the missing sea in the video footage. As far as I can tell, that's a game bug. It was missing for me too when I arrived at the location, but it began to render properly when I loaded a save. As nice as the new update is in terms of gameplay, Cybepunk is still a buggy mess, only less so . See the next spoiler for reference.

With that out of the way, please take a look at the yellow concrete texture in both screenshots. Usually we can blame YT compression for this, but the capture comes the 4K feed, surely there's enough bandwidth to preserve most texture detail in slow motion footage such as this.

The new lighting from RR is sweet, but the IQ compromise is not worth it right now, at least until they fix the most glaring issues.

Water in 2077 is an afterthought so it kinda makes sense that the devs forgot about that.

Off topic, but seeing his 3080 throttling at 1.8 GHz shows his power limit is being hit. That means his voltage is over 1v. I really don't like how common it is to hide the GPU's core voltage in these kind of videos.

That was my opinion in the games first year of release, but looks good to me now.

10 min mark
Anytime I watch this latest version there are graphical glitches. I skipped ahead. Watch homie's jacket not render at 25:10. I'm sure I'd see more if I kept skipping ahead and watching for more than 30 seconds. Walking around so slow is probably to try to hide some of the issues.

I missed this article, don't know if it has been discussed elsewhere on the forums but Nvidia VP of Research says DLSS is here to stay. Native resolution is out. Basically it is coverage of a DF disussion video about it.

"During their discussion with Digital Foundry's Alex Battaglia and PCMR's Pedro Valadas, Bryan Catanzaro — Nvidia's VP of Applied Deep Learning Research — stated that native resolution gaming is no longer the best solution for maximum graphical fidelity. Catanzaro went on to say that the gaming graphics industry is headed toward more significant reliance on AI image reconstruction and AI-based graphics rendering in the future."

Translation:

Getting 50% performance gains in the real world is hard, but we can easily come up with something that will artificially make the bars even bigger and will of course be limited to new additions to the hardware (sorry people who bought last generation's lie) so these gains can't be enjoyed by all.

The more you buy the more you're bought.

We've conditioned the gaming graphics industry to confidently rely on AI image reconstruction instead of good ol' fashioned game optimization, because why try and squeeze out 50% more fps yourself when we will push for the feature that does that work for you?

BTW with how hard DF is pushing this, and the amount of content they are churning out for it. Can we just start calling them Digital Founder's Edition? 🤣
Digital Founder's is becoming more of a joke publication with each passing day. They say they're only throwing all of this DLSS/AI voodoo at us all the time because they're all about that cutting edge tech. Astonishing image quality that will soon be available to the masses.

It's all about pushing the envelope of gaming technology but when it comes to the simplest tried and true methods for making games look good like with more VRAM or good hardware at affordable prices, they pussyfoot around the issue and blame external factors, e.g. oPtImIzAtIoN & iNfLaTiOn.

Keep bringing us those paid-for early Nvidia tech demos! You'll not convince me their Nvidia early access is 100% independent from their editorial stance when Nvidia has been caught cutting off other publications for not playing ball.
