I know we've all heard how to enable DMA in win2k but i've done that, and it is still in PIO mode! I have an Asus p3b-f and an IBM 75GXP drive so surely my hardware can do DMA..and it has done it before. When i had win2k server installed it was in DMA mode but now that i have win2k pro installed, the first time i booted up it was in DMA mode then i check today and it's in PIO mode only. I was wondering if there is a registry key to force it to DMA mode? I know i can get DMA mode so it's not a problem. The system is really slow without it so please help! Thanks!

I'm using a UDMA-33 Drive on MSI K7T Pro 2A(flashed with latest official BIOS and VIA 4-in-1 4.28Beta) with Win2K Pro. I've set the UDMA options in the BIOS to auto. Problem is, I don't get the option for UDMA in the device manager under ide/atapi controller. Also, Win2K Pro detects my drive as SCSI. WTF?

That's how the Via drivers work... making the OS think it's SCSI. Causes mad problems with dvd player and burner software. I chose not to install it my third time around.

I still have my drives running in PIO mode. Tried the hot fix, didn't work, going to try the registry hack listed in this thread when the guy responds. I heard SP2 works too, but it's still in beta, and rare to find.

GoldServe, have you tried the switch utility to bring the drive down to ata66 so Win2K will recognize it?

Read the thread and the only conclusion I can make out is to wait for SP2.

The best solution pre SP2 is to download the ATASWITCH utility from the IBM storage site and set you disk to operate in ATA-66 (UDMA 4) mode. Win2K will then recognise it and work fine. Don't mess with the beta 4-in-one IDE drivers.

Had a similar problem on a BE6-2 with Win2K not remembering to make my TDK121032 (Plextor clone) use DMA even though "use it if available" was checked in device manager.

I found a registry hack (posted at the end of the message) in a Usenet post that worked. In this hack, it's assumed that the drive you want to run in DMA is set up as the Master on the Secondary IDE controller, so the keys with "Master" in them are the ones you want to look at if you intend to modify this. And note that this is for the Plextor 1210A and its clones. I don't know if it would work for other drives. Always export any registry keys to a file to back them up before you start hacking.

Anyway, with my TDK as the master on the secondary channel, I only had to make the following 3 changes in [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E96A-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}\0002]:

"MasterDeviceTimingMode"=dword:00000410
"MasterDeviceTimingModeAllowed"=dword:ffffffff
"MasterIdDataCheckSum"=dword:00011cb8

After changing the registry, Device Manager immediately reported the drive was running in DMA mode but I had to reboot to make the change really work. Some have speculated that Win2K will switch the IDE channel from DMA to PIO if the system goes into suspend mode, so that's something to watch out for.

Here's the complete reg fix as posted on Usenet:

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E96A-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}\0002]
