I'm trying to set up the DNS records for the domain name www.neverseethwalls.co.uk which is hosted by PlusNet. I already have one DNS record set up as such:

Left Field: www
Type: A
Pri: < nothing >
Right Field: < our static IP address >

When pinging the domain www.neverseethwalls.co.uk it resolves ok, but when pinging the domain neverseethewalls.co.uk (no www) it does not resolve to the IP. What kind of DNS record do I need to set to get this to work? Any other tips on creating DNS records would be appreciated

TIA for your help!

You need an A record for the domain name...

neverseethwalls.co.uk. 14400 IN A <your-IP>

Don't forget the period after the domain.

Ok, thanks. I'll try that I'll post back if it's still not working after the DNS server's have been updated...

Ok, well I tried what you said and here's how I put it in (the field names are the ones the ISP specifies in their config form):

Left Field: neverseethwalls.co.uk.
Type: a
Pri: n/a
Right Field: 212.56.109.110

Pinging neverseethewalls.co.uk still didn't resolve to our IP address...

So I then decided to put a CNAME record instead, like so:

Left Field: neverseethewalls.co.uk.
Type: cname
Pri: n/a
Right Field: 212.56.109.110

This doesn't seem to work either What's wrong?

Thanks,

With CNAMEs, I believe you are suppose to CNAME to another hostname, not IP...

In bind, I just do:

IN A {IP ADDRESS}

(first column blank)... Although it seems like bind should see blank as identical to your domain name since you had a dot at the end... Are you using bind or some abstraction software? If you are using abstraction, perhaps it isn't being intelligent about the '.' at the end and appending the domain name anyway.... Just a thought....

Well if you previously made the request before the change had been made, then the cache at your ISP level is going to need to be cleared.

I'd recommend waiting a good 12-24 hours before trying the query again.

DNS propagation and caching is the nature of dealing with the namespace beast.

edit: and patience
