I run Windows server 2003 with IIS running multiple domains. Right now yahoo is my registar and they take care of my dns entries.

I want to use my own dns server for my domains..i think i understand how to set it up software wise.. but when i set yahoo to use my dns server they want the server name that im using.. (i.e. ns1.tizite.com, and ns2.tizite.com)... but how will they get the tizite.com IP address.. how will it know where to find that dns server?

any help is appreciated guys.

Use the IP address(s) for your dns server(s). When they are added to your registrar they'll probably do a reverse lookup and get the hostname. So after you type in the IP address(s) and hit submit it'll probably show you ns1.hostname.com and ns2.hostname.com or what ever they actually are.

You have to register your name servers hostnames and IPs with your registrar. This is a completely different process than changing NS entries for a domain.

It's been a couple years since I've done this process so I barely recall how it was done (we had to do it through Network Solutions).

I just tried this out with network solutions with my domain...

First I typed in the name of the name server, i.e. ns1.whatever.com Then I clicked next and it asked for the IP address of that server.

I used to run my own dns server and this is the process I went though to set it up. What's funny is that when I clicked next after typing in what my dns server used to be, it actually had my old static IP that I had with my old DSL provider. So like Mucman said, there is some other place where the ns entries are kept with registrars. It appears that network solutions automatically ask for them when you try to change to a brand new name server, but if that name server already exist they already know the IP address for it.

So if this process isn't automatically asking for the IP's of your servers then you probably have to fill out another form or contact them so you can add them.

You want to Host your own Internet DNS?

Why? You plan to buy the Intrenet.

Do you have a static IP on the the internet service where you are hosting from? If not you will not be able to setup your own DNS servers.

I have to ask this what is the purpose of running a dns server? I've thought about doing it before but I still use www.zonedit.com for my dns. What benefits would I get from doing it myself over zonedit?

it would be free.. plus im the type of person that likes to do everything.. having someone else do it eliminates the whole purposed of having a webserver in general anyways... plus i want to learn how it is done.

plus i dont like relying on any other servers to be up except my own.

Hmmm, I'll second the "there's no real point" idea. Other than adding more hassles because I know my servers are a lot less reliable than the millions of dollars my DNS handler has paid for theirs, there's no real point. Did I mention there is no real point?

Education is always a valid point. If this domain is required for business activity though, then I agree the DNS should be done by a companies that does DNS.
