Do all down comforters smell like a wet dog?

I got it as a Christmas gift, and I washed it and put it on my bed, but I just noticed there is a distinct wet dog odor coming from it...

It was new, and I don't have a dog.

I thought you weren't supposed to let things with down in them get wet, period....

Wash it again, and this time make an extra effort to dry it out completely. I'd wash it early in the morning, and then either throw it outside for the day (flip it over /shake it every so often) and/or put it into the dryer if you're really brave.

All big down products (comforters, duvets, feather beds) smell a little bit, but shouldn't be too much. Also, fyi, it doesn't smell like a wet dog.. it smells like a wet duck. ;-)

Why did you wash a brand new down comforter?

Second. You should have gotten a comforter cover. Most down comforters arent meant to be washed even if they say machine washable.

Um, I don't think you should be washing a down comforter! UNLESS it is not real down, there is no way it would say to wash it. I have a down duvet on our bed, with a cover of course, and it is dry clean only and even then they warn about the "Feathers falling" and losing their bounciness.

Our is heavenly. A little warm for Alabama winters, but it is awesome. It, of course, has no smell.

You should never wash down. It probably will not work well anymore, even if you succeed in getting rid of the smell with a subsequent washing. Some down comforters, even very high-quality ones, do smell somewhat, but I imagine you have amplified that by getting it wet.

If it smells when it is brand new, you're supposed to just air it out. Use a duvet cover there on.

Did you use fabric softener?

I've never had that problem.

i've washed a cheap goose down before, and there's no smell afterwards. there's something wrong with yours.

i have many down comforters in our house and not a single one smells funky. you've got a real problem there...

down comforters are 99.9999999% dry clean only. it smells like wet dog cuz it was wet too long, and stuff grew and died.
