Does anyone here have one of the newer Seagate 7200.10 hard drives that use perpendicular recording? I've got one and it makes this high pitched noise that I'm sure will eventually drive me insane!

No. Read SR Forums. There are certain 7200.10s that are loud and certain ones that don't whine. There are ways to tell also =]
thanks. I did some reading and found the post where someone discovered how to tell the difference between the silent and noisy drive. Unfortunately theres nothing on the outside of the box to tell and when I try to RMA this drive, Seagate will discover that theres nothing wrong with it other than being noisy (and my wife claims to not hear anything).Originally posted by: Joony

Different people can pick up different sounds. For example: My ISP sent me a DSL modem and it makes a very high pitched sound that drives me insane. Out of 8 people, I'm the only one that can hear it. I sent the modem back 3 times, got 3 other modems and all 3 have the same sound. I eventually just put the modem/router in a closet.
It could just be that you are particularly sensitive to the sound that the drive makes.

apparently this is the way to tell the difference between the whiney 7200.10 and the quiet 7200.10:
