Do all Seagate 7200.10 (Perpendicular recording) make a high pitched whine?

Does anyone here have one of the newer Seagate 7200.10 hard drives that use perpendicular recording? I've got one and it makes this high pitched noise that I'm sure will eventually drive me insane!

Mine doesn't make any high pitched whine. It is a hair louder than some other drives I have, as far as "clicking" is concerned, but no whine. Based on comments I've seen about these on other forums, it seems the noise level varies greatly, though I haven't heard anyone complaining about high pitched whine.

I have the 750GB SATA version and I can't say that I can hear it making any type of high pitched whining noise.

My 320GB does. Have looked at the Scythe Quiet Drive box or just obtaining a Samsung T series drive instead.

Whe the room is noisy (TV, etc), I don't notice it but when the room is quiet, it drives me insane!

thanks. I did some reading and found the post where someone discovered how to tell the difference between the silent and noisy drive. Unfortunately theres nothing on the outside of the box to tell and when I try to RMA this drive, Seagate will discover that theres nothing wrong with it other than being noisy (and my wife claims to not hear anything).

I have the 400 GB SATA 7200.10 and it doesn't make any detectable whine. Seeks do produce a quite audible clank, though.

btw what causes that whine? Is it the bearings?

I have had a couple of drives from different manufacturers that have out of the blue developed the whine. They seem to work fine except that annoying high pitched sound.

No whining here, I actually find my drive to be very quiet.

I tried a 7200.9 and it sounds almost exactly the same as the 7200.10. So close that I'd swear they must have labelled the .9 wrong. Is there a util that would tell me?

Different people can pick up different sounds. For example: My ISP sent me a DSL modem and it makes a very high pitched sound that drives me insane. Out of 8 people, I'm the only one that can hear it. I sent the modem back 3 times, got 3 other modems and all 3 have the same sound. I eventually just put the modem/router in a closet.

It could just be that you are particularly sensitive to the sound that the drive makes.

Some people can hear higher frequencies than others. I know I can because I can hear those really whiney drives, I can hear a whine/buzz from my mobo when my CPU is "thinking" (I'm serious, and I'm not the only one), I can hear when a TV tube is on but the volume muted, etc.... Drives me nuts sometimes.
