Do Americans know where their families are from?

I'm pretty sure that my family is from Germany given my mother's and father's last names.

My dad's side of the family is from the Ukraine and my dad was actually born in Germany during WW2 and immagrated just after when he was 5. My mom's side is a mixture of German and Scottish and I still have relatives living in Scotland that come and visit.

I know both sides of my family take great pride in their heritage.

I know my great grandfather on both my mom and dad's side were already here. Beyond that, I have no idea what my family's history is. Though I am kind of curious.

Most everyone I know knows their heritage. I don't, as I was adopted, though I know my adopted family's to a certain extent (I never bothered learning the percentages as they really don't apply to me). You've got New York/Boston Jews on one side and Portuguese Catholics on the other. Good mix...

I'm a mix but I do not know all of the components. Some english, some scottish, some danish, some german, some russian, some ....???

My kids get all of that, plus chinese so they are very mixed.

My dad traced our entire genealogy back to the late 1600s and published the tree. Took him 15 years but he did it.

I disagree. I find it interesting to see where your family is from, and trace the generations to different parts of the globe. I used to think Genealogy was stupid as well was I was younger, but as I got a little older I realized how interesting it can be.

It is academically interesting, but it should not be part of "who you are" unless that culture directly influenced you. It is different when someone you were alive to remember and interact with was from another country or when the area you live in/grew up in emphasized a particular culture, but beyond that it has no real meaning.

Don't know why some supremacist groups think that a one race background is superior. It seems that mixing is more likely to provide better offspring. Just look at royalty from any country throughout history for easy examples.

i know my mom's side is mostly Irish or Scottish and my dad's side is mostly German, but beyond that I don't know. I would like to know more about my family though.

On my mom's mother's side: great-grandmother and great-grandfather came from Cuba in the 20s. My mom's father's side is Italian (don't know what generation came to the US, probably great-grandfather). My dad's side is a mix of Italian, Irish, and English - no idea when they came over (probably pre-1900).

Kind of. I used to think it was a simple 25,25, 50 breakdown. After doing much more extensive research I realized it was far more complex. I know I have a lot of German and English in there though.
