I like to ignore my kid's cries of hunger for a while as I play Far Cry 4, at least for a few missions. It adds realism and a layer of real life drama to the survivalist gaming mentality during such missions.

I am jacked into my water cooling system by a direct IV. I use my lifeblood to cool my gaming rig as I frag my way to being totally wasted.

Well, I'm just going to ignore the blatant spread of misinformation by OP. . .

I "cured" my video game "addiction" by playing them less, so I can accomplish more professionally. I hardly play more than 10 hours most weeks, and when I'm busy, I don't play at all.

Just do something you care about.

Nailed it. You are only addicted to gaming until somthing more important comes along. For example a job, wife, kids etc. You could say that i was "addicted" to WOW once but it fades away, just like most games. Relax and live your life. A video game addiction is perhpas the safest and best of all addictions. And if you let it affect you socially or mentally, then you lack the requisite social or mental skills required to live/thrive. Darwinism.

What the last two posts describe aren't addictions, though.

That's a healthy hobby.

The main problem everyone here has is denial. You just refuse to accept that gaming is mentally harmful to you and you try to pretend it's "just another hobby". It isn't. It's a short term dopamine fix, but all it does is cause you to become socially inept, you will have the emotional maturity of a child, you will become lazy, you will get easily irritated.

Again, the main problem is denial. Stop trying to pretend that PC or console isn't harming you, deep down you know it is, but you're so scared of losing that pitiful level of enjoyment you get from staring into a monitor that you refuse to accept the truth.

Nobody is asking you to become the life of the party, you can just replace your gaming habit with something more natural, like watering your garden and walking your dog, but get away from games because they're killing your brain.

I prefer gaming hobbits. Just look at those cute little furry feet!

I game for maybe 6-7 hours a week.

Guess I'm addicted.

Are people that sit in front of the TV all day addicted?

...and addiction to completely baseless accusations!

I'm almost expecting a follow-up on what a "REAL MAN" should be.

You'll note she (and it's most likely a she) is very adamant about only men playing games. Women with candy crush and farmville? Well that's just fine! THEY're not addicted!

As you can see from his follow-up post there is no way playing video games can be a healthy hobby. Somehow I doubt this person is that serious, this is just hits too many ridiculous points about gaming to not be trolling, or at least I hope so. He was also posting similarly obvious flamebait in the mobile device forum, something along the lines of "how can people not like the iphone" which proceeded to devolve into yet another android vs. iphone thread.

I think I'll need to do something about my internet forum addiction long before I do anything about games. When I manage to come across a really good game I may play it several hours a day until I beat it (which, given that I mostly play indie games, results in a couple days..) but then I'll go back to not really playing anything for a while until I finally find something in the narrow set of genres I'm actually interested in. I probably spend more time looking through my Steam queues than actually playing games :/

Actually, that only even applies to the last year or two. Before then I was playing maybe one game a year at most...

It just depends. Define loser. There are grown adults on Twitch who play 40 plus hours a week, make good money, and have a wife/gf. Do they escape being a loser because they are lucky enough to make money from their hobby?

People are so worried about status, and what other people will think of them. NEWS FLASH: life is so short. In 50 years most of your friends will be either dead or dying.

Good point on 50 years. I agree. Be whoever the fuck you are. If your bills are paid and your lawn is mowed(generalizing) who cares how many times you play a video game? If you're taking care of your wife/kids/insert adult responsibilities then what you do on your own time shouldn't bother any one.

I grew up with games but got heavy when I started building my own computers in 1995. Played MMORPG and RTS heavily for 15 years easy. I drifted from them now and can't get that intense satisfaction I used to get. I miss it badly. I get it from cars and hardware now. I wish I could play more, maybe I am waiting for the 'next' Blizzard or something to revolutionize the industry. I respect greatly any gamer. I think anyone who looks down on gamers doesn't understand pure joy and has zero imagination.

He's right you guise. Come on man admit it. Stop living in denial. I'm living proof this guy is right. Soon after turning watering my garden and walking my dog into my hobbies I have since joined Mensa, made my first multi-million dollar sale, bought my first hooker and bag of blow and enjoy dinner at michelin starred truck rest stops. Sometimes even restaurants. But I digress, whatever that means.

The fact of the matter is if you're not watering your garden and walking your dog you're just not living up to your potential, you're just burning up kinetic energy and that just won't do.

I just don't buy new video-games. My girlfriend on the other hand...

For the most part multiplayer is the most addicting thing in games. Everyone tires of single player eventually.

I pay attention to how playing a certain game makes me FEEL. Some games require 20 minutes of dedicated time that can't be paused. Thats really sort of unacceptable.

I'll play like... minecraft solo survival and do dishes. Don't get all ambitious in mine craft and be like.... I'm going to chop down every tree and make it into a 35 story fortress... don't do that.

I didn't play PlanetSide2 because of the horrible grind, and battles that go on forever. I could participate for 2 hours in a battle that never ended and never achieve any objective I had my mind set on just because we were outnumbered or whatever. So I'd get off planet side 2 feeling shitty overall. Not to mention how much lag you eventually got used to. Any game that has an extravagant grinding system comes under immediate suspicion. Destiny is another game I won't touch.

I spent 10s of hours over the course of many days to build a pyramid out of smooth stone, all mined/smelted legit in Survival mode. Did the same with Oak Logs making a Tower with staircase inside all the way to the build limit. Made a 5 block wide fenced cobblestone glowstone every 5 blocks lit road of 10ish kms in length. All this and more over the course of about a year and probably many more times the time spent gathering resources for it all. Had help though from a niece though, but had a ton of fun doing it.
