Do assassinating presidents mean anything nowadays?

All these movies and 24 talk about assassinating presidents, do they hold any practicality in real life?

They're just figure heads and VP will take over with same agenda. The military generals and cabinet members run the actual country anyway. The symbolic assault piss them off more than producing a real strategic value.

What do you think? Something I've always wanted to get off my chest.

Not really, there will be some major unrest for a while but within a week everything will go back to normal. I agree with your point, a president really does not do much, General get what they want, big business get what they want, these politicians are there just to make money and give out free iPods to get votes.

A 43-year-old northeast Dallas man has pleaded guilty to posting an online message threatening to kill President Barack Obama.

Brian Dean Miller faces up to five years in federal prison and a fine of up to $250,000.
He will be sentenced later this year. He is in federal custody in Seagoville.

Miller professed to be upset at Obama because of federal legislation to overhaul the health-care system.

He pleaded guilty before U.S. Magistrate Judge Paul Stickney a day after his trial was supposed to start.

In a message posted on Craigslist on Mach 21, the night Congress passed the health-care bill, Miller wrote:

"People, the time has come for revolution."

An Arlington resident alerted the Secret Service to the post. They tracked it to the house where Miller lived with his mother, near Lovers Lane and Skillman Street.

Miller eventually admitted writing the threatening message.

This. It would impact politics, but it wouldn't hurt the country. On one hand, it might result in a less appealing guy taking the president's place (i.e. LBJ replacing JFK), but on the other hand the replacement would probably benefit from a huge boost in popularity/approval for some time (like Bush got after 9/11). Depending on how close it is to an election, it may or may not benefit the party in power.

If you're referring to the movie "Death of a President," there's no way that could be construed as a death threat (or even encouragement for someone else to kill the president).

Really I'm not sure the OP is correct that there have ever been any "assasinating Presidents" in the first place, in the sense of a President who _personally_ was in the habit of assasinating people, so its a bit pointless to ask "do assasinating Presidents mean anything" as they probably _never_ meant anything, as they never existed.

Probably better to ask "Do philandering Presidents mean anything nowadays", as there have probably been a few of them (JFK being the obvious one).
