<<Ummm, 245HP and plenty of torque is enough to tow quite a bit. I don't tow anyway. I'd be hauling stuff (if even that).
Tundra
245 HP
315 lb/ft torque
Max Tow, 7100lbs>>
If you tow 7100lbs for real with one of those little trucks, you'd be out of your mind. It is simply too small. Truly the tail wagging the dog.
Both the Ford and Chevy full size(probably the Dodge, too) are rated to tow more. I wouldn't tow that much even with one of those. Manufacturer ratings on tow capacity are mainly sales tools. They have no bearing on reality.
I fully agree that for the most part, American cars lag behind Jap. cars in quality. In certain areas, however, like full size trucks, U.S. cars are unmatched.
I work at the one of the 3 largest Ford dealers in the nation, and I can attest that Ford quality is most certainly NOT job #1. Anyone in our service dept will tell you the same thing.
I believe that Ford lags far behind GM in quality. The sheer amount of recalls on all Fords proves this.
That being said, I've heard from friends at Toyota dealerships that the Toyota "almost full size" trucks are not quite up to Toyota's reputation of quality.
Bottom line is, the Toyota truck, regardless of advertised horsepower and towing capacity, simply is not a legitimate match for Ford, Dodge, and certainly not Chevy trucks. They can all simply work rings around it.
One more word on towing: NSF4 stated that the Toyota truck is rated to tow 7100lbs. Insane. You need at least a 1 ton truck (F-350, C-3500) to tow that much on a regular basis.
