How can the lack of belief be a religion? If I don't like hamburgers that does not make me part of an anti-hamburger cult.

more or less that some athiest follow athiesm like a religion. not that all athiests are following a religion. although deciding that there is no god is more or less somewhat of a religion.

here is what we could look at

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Agnostic_atheism

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Agnostic_theist

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Agnosticism

and for further reference

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gnosticism

i am agnostic although neither atheist or theist

here is somthing that holds interest for me

since this is more or less relevant to this topic will bring up my former thoughts on the subject

so is the god that hebrews christians and muslims worship (and yes all of the) really aten (which is more or less a direvitive of ra which local theban priests combined with amun as amen-re to increase their power)? or is yhwh a old canaanite diety? or is the yhwh of the hebrews a mixture of the two? integrating your beliefs and diety under a other diety and keeping that name of the other diety would be a way to try to hide from amun priests.

I seem to remember something about the worship of a stone monolith referred to as 'the rock' as the precursor of Abrahamic monotheism. A Jew would probably know more.

Too busy to google atm though.

the wonders of religion

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/General_Butt_Naked

and yes because what we all talk about at anandtech i get to double post.

this was the most i have read about in a while.

Liberia...

The Central Bank of Liberia is responsible for printing and maintaining the Liberian dollar, which is the primary form of currency in Liberia. Liberia is one of the world's poorest countries, with a formal employment rate of only 15%.[38] GDP per capita peaked in 1980 at US$496, when it was comparable to Egypt's (at the time).[46] In 2011, the country's nominal GDP was US$1.154 billion, while nominal GDP per capita stood at US$297, the third-lowest in the world.[2] Historically, the Liberian economy has depended heavily on foreign aid, foreign direct investment and exports of natural resources such as iron ore, rubber and timber.

They're probably poor because it seems they just all kill each other. Any other insight?

remember watching a program on liberia and the new female president coming to george w bush for aid. his exact words were "well i do not know why you are coming here". wrold bank and liberia were also in the program

there are a wide variety of athiesm types. so no athiesm in itself is not a religion. some of them are more or less a religion though. a religion of opposition to dieties.
There is only one atheism, many different atheists.

If you talk to a Nihilist vs. an Übermensch you will notice a difference. in a sense one has faith and the other has given themselves to despair.

That's not a fair analogy. More appropriate would be a lack of belief in Unicorns, Fairies, or Leprechauns.

I was trying to point out the absurdity in your equating belief/non-belief in deities with like/dislike of hamburgers. Since my sarcasm went over multiple people's heads I will be more direct: It's not nearly the same thing to believe in something as it is to like the taste of something.

I wish I would have never brought up hamburgers. I apologize. I was hungry. Be happy I wasn't horny. My bad.

No, but there is only one God.

Unless you're Hindu. Or a member (now or then) of any of the other polytheistic religions throughout time.

Don't be silly, there are as many atheisms as there are atheists, since atheism is not defined by the inclusion of any necessary belief, but rather the exclusion of one very specific belief.

Yes, if you just "throw an eye" over Bible, Coran and Talmud, you will figure that (of course in different forms) are sharing the same principles/rules/happenings
