Do countries with a real winter produce more scientific achievement?

While there are exceptions it seems that most scientific and technical achievement has been achieved in areas of the world that have a winter cold enough to keep people indoors.

Once mankind had built roads, and especially railroads, cold weather climates seem to be conducive to scientific advances.

So does the fact people stay indoors more in cold winter climates stimulate scientific and technological advances?

Maybe.

But more war sure as hell helps stimulate advances in science and technology.

Places with more winter and darkness seem to produce better music in my opinion.

I agree with this and the OP.

Although I feel these colder places also have more cases of depression.

It must be the constant chattering of the teeth that does it.

There have been many remarkable achievements in science in England, which most Americans in the northern states wouldn't consider to have "real" winters. Rutherford came from my city which has relatively mild winters, but did his most important work in England. California and Texas are breeding grounds for modern computer scientists. But in general most equatorial locations also tend to be relatively poor, small or undeveloped nations, so it's no surprise that they don't have great scientific productivity.

It's probably because when you feel like you're in a furnace, it's hard to think about quantum mechanics. You just want to stretch out on the beach.

There is the CS corollary to the theory: Ca and Tx have lots of sunlight, which programmers inherently avoid. Thus, the theory of weather keeping people indoors, leading to an increase in productivity. This is in line with other parts of the weather theory.
