I have a 2 year old male corgi. My friends are telling me that dogs need a haircut from time to time. they even claim that the new hair will grow better(like grass? )

Is it true? If so, how much should I shave off? I dont want to have my dogs hair cut and then have it not grow for a very long time. If it is also not necessary, I probably dont want to do it either.

Only reasons I can think of for shaving dogs is if their hair is badly matted or if it's a long-haired breed that maybe overheats during the summer.

Certain breeds require grooming, but most dogs are ok the way they came out of the box.

It is called grooming.

Farm dogs and those belonging to the homeless can probably go without. Dogs got along without grooming before people started grooming them.

However, domesticated dogs generally need a trim every so often. Also, some dogs are much more comfortable with a "summer cut" when it starts to get warm.

I give our dog and long hair cat haircuts because it does help prevent mats and because they love the shorter hair.

if you feel like it, or during the summer for long hair breeds. if it looks fine though, theres no real reason to. hair falls out and gets replaced naturally, just comb it out often enough so it doesn't form webbed knots inside trapping dead skin and ickiness and stank

we have a Husky and since the summers are hot here we give ours a pre-summer hair cut to help her through it.

I thought humans created dogs by selectively breeding wolves.

edit: nvm, wiki: Based on DNA evidence, the wolf ancestors of modern dogs diverged from other wolves about 100,000 years ago,[2][3] and dogs were domesticated from those wolf ancestors about 15,000 years ago.[4] This date would make dogs the first organism to be domesticated by humans.

I have some type of husky mix, and I shaved her twice this summer, but let it grow out in the winter. I think it's good for dogs to get an occasional trim.

From what I understand, short hair breeds rarely do, but long hair breeds definitely do. Matting in a dog's coat becomes a health issue if allowed to persist.
