No they don't. Anything that has hype associated with it doesn't.

Past 10+ years I've had just about every vacume you can imagine. Now we ONLY use Rigid shop vacs at home.

Cheap and lifetime warranty.

Sure they are loud, big (although they do have a small unit thats 4 hp as well) and one can say they are not as "versatile".

When I buy a vacuum I expect it to vacuum well and last. Rigid vacuums better than just about any vacuum (probably better) AND it has life time warranty.

That's really all I care about. I just wish I've done it WAY sooner cause I flushed good 1500-2000 down the toilet over the years.....

You guys manually vacuum? Just buy a Neato for each level of your house, and let it do its thing while you're at work.

I can tell you from personal experience that they do work very very well and that yes they do beat up your carpet.

IMO, the best vaccuums are the old Rainbows. Not the newer models. Theyre kind of a pain to fill up with water and dump every time, but they are functionally the best vaccuums out there as far as Im concerned.

ive had my dc24 animal for about 6 months and the thing owns. works great. i have the hardwood floor attachment to use on my hardwood floors and works well as well.

but everytime i vacuum the carpet it is spotless and the carpet looks new again.

i also like how it is bagless and how easy/convenient it is to use the attachments. real easy to clean too.

The vacuum store we took it to apparently can't stand Dysons.

Not surprised, they don't get to sell bags, they probably can't make the same % profit selling them and I would imagine parts are more expensive to fix them.

As jeebus said, they have their ups and downs but overall I think they are a very good buy.

Mine's getting pretty old and has also never needed a belt. When I was a kid, I remember vacuums eating belts almost as often as they needed the bag changed.

My cordless Dyson is amazing; the downside is that the godamn motor burned out and it's something like $80 to fix it. Also the battery sucked, I bought a third party battery pack from amazon and it worked way better than the one that came with it.

In terms of actual usage though, it was the best cordless vac that I've ever owned, hands down. The main downside was that it would only run about 3 minutes before running out of juice.

I'm on my second one. The first lasted seven years, but the clutch burned out (according to the repair shop who wasn't able to get it back to anything resembling original suction. Feel free to doubt this - I do).

Anywho, I replaced it with a Shark, but wasn't impressed. Picked up a refurb on Woot last month, and it was worth every penny.

Don't pay retail. Check woot, and save a couple of hundred bucks on a refurb.

They can't just replace the clutch and resurface the flywheel?

The evolving reputation on Dysons (if you read enough user reviews and articles) was that in past models, they were bullet-proof, reliable, powerful, expensive monsters that were worth the cost to many who had the dough.

Today's newer models are cheaply built, unreliable and MUCH louder. So loud in fact, that many sold them due to hearing loss. Go to Youtube to research loudness complaints. They may not sound loud in the store, but they do indeed get eventually high pitch ear splittingly loud. You can catch a refurb/return on Woot or Frys if you want one (though the warranty is less and you may be SOL sooner rather than later as many fail within 3 years).

For less money, you can get a Shark that will perform quite nicely. Companies like Shark have done a fantastic job catching up to the Dyson without the price premium. Dyson is worried as they've had conferences in the past on how to compete specifically with Shark.

For myself, I went with a Miele upright. It's as expensive as a Dyson, but the motor and parts are built in Germany--old school strong parts to boot--not flimsy China plastics. And true to German design, picks up everything you throw at it, works on wood floors with rubberized feet, it doesn't eat carpet fiber like a Dyson does and is the QUIETEST in the market by a large measure (I wanna have some hearing left when I'm old). The reputation on Mieles is that it's called "the 20+ year machine" b/c they are so well built and last that long. Hopefully mine will last that long. Consumer Reports recently rated it #1 /#2(?) and is top-rated on Amazon. I'm not surprised.

They work well but are terrible for your carpet, the beater bar bristles are way too stiff.

The first time you vacuum you will be blown away at the "dirt" you picked up, but look closer and you'll see it's about 90% carpet fiber. That is not what you want.

Go with a good quality bagged vacuum. I'm partial to the eureka boss.

Maybe you just have shitty carpet? We don't get very many carpet fibers in our vacuum, just dog hair, dirt, dust, more dirt, the occasional lego, etc. Feel like we are constantly emptying it, but with 3 boys, 3 dogs, and now a cat, we have a lot of crap to clean up.

if your dyson is loud, there is a problem with it. mine is not dead silent or anything, but it is not loud by any means.

however my first one made a loud high pitch noise like you are stating. i googled it and narrowed it down to being a little hole in the hose somewhere.

since i had just gotten it (was a refurb) i contacted the company and they sent me another refurb and it has been fine since then.

Are they good vacuums? Yes. Are they built well? No. Are they worth the price? No.

After going through 2 Dysons, we took a Consumer Reports recommendation and went with this: http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Eureka+-...&skuId=4844685

It actually cleans just as well as our last D14, and the turbo hand attachment is better than anything Dyson had. My only complaints are it's heavy, and the hose doesn't quite have a long enough reach when using attachments.

Otherwise, I would definitely get another one of these over a Dyson. Especially at $160.

If it's loud, it usually means the hose is clogged.

Eurekas are indeed awesome and a good alternative to a Shark for that price range. I had a Eureka until it died on me after 4 years and went with a Miele as its replacement (I wanted a German engine that'll hopefully last instead of a cheaply made Made in China engine that are so prevalent nowadays).

i have a st bernard and lots of stairs. Every time I vacuum(which is every couple of days) the entire dyson is full of dog hair, a neato is not going to cut it.

i love pets, but that is one major reason i never want to get one of my own. at least not yet, who knows if it will change when we have kids. ill stick to enjoying family and friends pets though so i don't have to deal with how dirty they are heh.

So what's a good enough vacuum for around $100? My mom's 15 year old Fantom Thunder vacuum just died. (basically the motor went kaput)

I have an Oreck and love it.

Talked to the janitor at work a year ago. She said the vacuums our company buys are the best (8000 person facility) but expensive as hell. Forget the brand but they are not dysons.

If you want the best, find out what major corporations use.

Overrated, and overpriced. The way to go is an old style high quality baged vacume. I've used the Hoover Platnum, and currently own a Orek Graphite, they look boring and don't have many fancy bells and whistles, but they work, they are simple and easy to maintain and will last for YEARS.
