on the same day your final lab worth 65% of your grade is due? idk how long its going to take me to finish, it says im 65% done right now, and i've been working since 1:30 on it.

edit: now its saying im 80% complete, so yeah, who knows.

Did you tell them this? Probably not. I'm sure they would have given more consideration if you had communicated the situation better. See, here's the thing, employers have 1928 other kids trying to get that internship in this economy. You better pander to their needs (or clearly communicate your situation) or you don't need to come back, like you were told.

He did you a favour by taking that job out of consideration for you. Sounds like an awful manager.

or a place that does not remotely have their shit together. reminds me of where i work. ill spare you the details, but everything between my interview and my first day a couple of weeks later was hurried, unorganized, and poorly (if at all) handled by the HR department....of a hospital with several thousand employees and almost 250 people in their IT department.

youd think *something* would have gone smoothly but eh...not so much.

F that. If the company is going to be unreasonable like that then I wouldn't want to work for them anyway.

Yeah. Few years ago I registered with a temp agency. One morning get a call from a company that found me through the agency and wants me to come in that day. Thing is, it was 8:30 AM and they wanted me there by 9 and it was at least half an hour just to drive there, not even counting taking a shower, getting dressed, and looking up driving directions. Luckily they weren't dicks about it, I ended up being there around 9:30 (partly thanks to Google Maps screwing up their location) and everything went fine.

no, but they really like employees that will work that way.

having you drop what you are doing for an interview is a good trial.

It absolutely is.

Of course - It's also "Beck and Call"

Yes, I stated on my application and preliminary interview that I was still in school and I gave him multiple copies (at least 3 different copies) of a detailed schedule of when I was and wasn't available, and that my availability would change come 5/13/2011 when this semester comes to an end. This position wasn't for an internship, it was at the car dealership. I also told him my schedule for the fall semester of school, to let him know I plan on staying with the company at least until my graduation in December. There is no excuse, he had all the information of my school schedule.

They're making you do VB? Seriously? What kind of school is this?

University of Colorado @ Denver. Its a requirement for my minor, its not very hard but its super long and since its web-based you have to sit there and wait for the system to register what you do which takes forever.

Pretty much, yea.

1 company I worked for, your scheduled shift was 50 hours 1 week, 70 hours the next week, you had 4 days off a month. That 4 days off is "if" no more work came in. If more work came in, we went on 7 days a week. If even more work came in, we would go on 7 days a week, 12 hours a day. Sometimes I did not get a day off for 6 weeks, get 1 or 2 days off, then another month without a day off.

Another company I worked for, if you asked for a day off in the middle of the week to take care of business, you were likely to get fired. A long time employee with a great record needed to take a day to go to the court house and take care of some stuff. A few hours after the asked off, the owner of the company walked out there and gave the guy his pink slip.

I was let go from a company because I was going to college at night, and could not work past 5pm on 2 days of the week. The supervisor said he needed people to work overtime as needed, and my school schedule conflicted with the company.

3 days after that company let me go, I got a job with more time off and better benefits. So it was a blessing in disguise.

I've worked a few jobs that got in the way with my school schedule. not completely, but it was the same reason you posted, they needed me to "be available" and since I had school i couldnt be available.

Sounds like you're interviewing at some shitty companies, or at least companies with shitty managers.

The places I've interviewed/worked at have always been understanding with time. I almost find your story hard to believe.

Yeah my employers are a bit like that... sucks big time. I can barely seem to have any kind of social life with the way they stack work on me.

Man they don't give a fuck.

When I was around 20 going to college, applied at a Best Buy for part time work. Called me at 4PM after I had just walked in the door from a 8hr day at school. Wanted me to be there at 5PM for an interview.

Asked if they could reschedule, possibly giving me more than an hour notice. Replied that they probably wouldn't call me back if I missed this interview. So no I didn't bother going and never got a call back.
