Do female dogs generally need more attention?

My roommate has a female dog that's always desparate for petting, food, or for you to put her in your lap. My new dog, who is female, is always waiting for just the right moment to spring into your lap for some attention. My roommate's girlfriend adopted a female dog a few weeks ago and she too is always wanting attention. Whereas my other dog, a male, doesn't really give two figs about you unless you bring him food or are about to take him for a walk.

I'm guessing that it was babied too much as a puppy. My female dogs don't exhibit those types of problems. But, my brother's fiancee's dog DOES. It was always carried as a puppy, from what i heard anyways.

Could be. She was a stray though. The other dogs have been adopted from the animal shelter. So I don't really know what went on with them when they were younger. Though my female showed some signs of neglect when I picked her up.

My female beagle likes to get petted and loves to eat. I think dogs are like people, each one is unique.

I just thought it was funny that all the female dogs in our household crave attention, while the sole male doesn't really care. I don't know how the fems are going to cope once school gets started again.

It's universal. Women need the attention, men don't really care what goes on around them.

i've read that female dogs are more likely to like babying. male dogs like male adolecents squirm out of hugs i have a male puppy, he doesn't stay on your lap for long

I think like others have said it also depends on how they were raised. I've got a female dog (who's my baby thank you very much ) and I didn't pay "special" attention to her while she was still young. I played with her, walked her, fed her, and let her be a kid so to speak and she doesn't really need more attention. She gets all hyper and starts giving people her paw and licking them whenever family or friends arrive but after a minute or so she goes back and lays down. However, if there is a toy near by and you are in close proximity between her and the toy then she wants to play. She'll pick up the toy and put it in your hand and wait for you to start tugging on it. I don't think that qualifies as special attention because she's always been a pretty hyper dog and has always loved to play.

Our male dog isn't an attention hog as much as a jealous fool. He can't stand it if the cat is getting petted and he isn't. Of course he's got it in his head lately that if the cat can sit on your lap, so can he. He's an 85 pound yellow lab.

We have two male dogs -- one is ours, and we raised him to be independent. He likes to greet people when they arrive, but once the greeting is over, he's happy to play with his toys. The other one is a rescue and belongs to my Mum. He's the most attention deprived dog I've ever seen, and seems unable to amuse himself. His life consists of following us around from room to room looking up hopefully for us to reach down and pet him. Kind of sad. :-(
