Just a curious question. If they do work, which is the "best"?
Thanks for your time and experience...

They do work, I've read reviews on the subject but don't know of any off-hand. Go to 2CoolTek(or wherever else you like) and look at the Global-Win I-StormII. It's the best according to what I've seen.

I got a combo heatsink/fans for my scsi hard drive. It went from being unbearably hot to being only slightly warm. The heatsink covers the entire top of the drive and the fans blow directly through fins in the heatsink, pretty snazzy design in my opinion.

Doesn't the sucking action of the fan leave dusts on your Hard drive. Some of them come w/ a filter. But still, w/ the air blowing by, the dust still build up on the HD.

The fans do work. I have a couple of drives that were really hot when I opened the case.

I bought some coolers off an acution for about 10.00 shipped. Has dual fans and a filter. Didn't seem like they produced alot of airflow, but later when I checked the drives they were cool to the touch.

like CHiMPBizKiT, i got a chinsy 3-50mm-fan blower (sucker). It actually works sorta well. Less effective in some setups than others, since
1) the 3 fans dont provide much flow to begin with
2) for heavy OC'ing, with a lot of fans, you should have high(er) case pressure, which reduces the effectivness of these 50mm fans when trying to blow into the case
3) there isnt much ducting of the existing airflow onto the drive. I have a big case, lots of room, I need to put in a shroud to make sure all my flow is going over the drive and not into the drive slots above/below. this is a problem with my setup, and not the cooler per se.

ill never run a 7200rpm without a cooler of some sort. next time ill probably go with either the 'Ultimate' Harddrive Cooler by Vantec, or GlobalWin I-Storm II

oh, and wrt/dust in the case...it never ever seems to collect on the drive itself, just on the fans (needs blown out every 4mos or so).

i just found a site if you're looking for something to cool your hard drive down (without adding extra noise to your case) ... try www.quietpc.com. There's a cool gizmo there for hard drive cooling.

My DiamondMax plus 40 doesn't run hot. Its barley warm to the touch. The a couple of chips on the bottom do thou. Those are the only parts that could use cooling in current 7200rpm drives. But even they don't need them. Otherwise, the top, sides, front back are perfectly fine.

I don't see why you wouldn't run a current 7200 rpm without cooling.

After Having a 7200 rpm 30 giger leave blisters from me touching it when it was hot & Always run a cooler... The One I am currently using & am ralther happy with the results with is the Ultra Thin Exauster from 3dcool.com. Now My HD never even gets warm to the touch. Plus it doesnt take up a 5 1/4 bay, & Make my case look funky.
