Do HP computers use a standard sized power supply?

I have a friend with a HP a1340n and he wants to upgrade his graphics card which requires a new power supply. I remember back in the day, before I built my own computers, that HP used a smaller than normal power supply. Does this still apply or can I stick any power supply in there?

i think it depends on the PC. i've worked with a lot of HP workstations and the companies i've been with tend to have SFF PCs, which used small, goofy shaped PSUs custom made to fit in the case. not sure about towers though. I did notice they tended to use underpowered PSUs as well - 230W PSU for a prescott or pentium D PC?!?!?!?! are u kidding me lol?

I'm currently chatting with an HP rep and they are assuring me that the generic brand 300w PSU is sufficient for an ATI x850 Pro. I have a really hard time beleiving this. The PSU calculator said I needed 287 watts. So.... I feel at least a 380w name brand PSU is needed to be safe.

Edit: After beating around the bush for a while, trying to sell me HP power supplies, they finally told me that a standard ATX power supply will fit.

Edit 2: I already knew the PSU had a 24 pin connector, so I asked how many pins it had to make sure the technician knew what he was talking about. He told me 20. So I don't really trust what he said anymore.

HP business towers and mini towers do and have for years. Not sure about their retail PCs.

Hi, I'm looking at a HP Pavilion 533w that I'm scrapping out right now. It has the screw pattern reversed on the back of the case. A standard PSU may fit upside down if there is no external fan. It's also a non standard shape, but other than the screw hole reversal may fit OK. Maybe someone else has replaced an HP PSU and can tell you more.
