Do I have a dud? (Seagate Barracuda XT ST33000651AS)

I ran win 7 backup and keep getting I/O error on 4 attempts or every time.
Should I return it?
Or should I reformat it and try again?
I'm afraid reformatting the drive may void the return policy?

The reformat shouldn't matter it can't hurt the drive.

run seagates seatools test on the drive. perform the long test. it should give you a definitive yes/no answer whether you should return the drive or not.

Seagate, 3TB. I'd almost be surprised if you got a drive that didn't have problems.

Ever since Seagate and Maxtor hopped into bed together its been down hill for both!

Their drives are not reliable. All of them break down. The old barracuda was made by seagate.. this new barracuda is made by maxtor factories and what not.

This one is a DUD and it's going back. Besides, Seatools also shows it is a 32mb cache drive which is not what I thought it would be. This is my first Seagate in 5 years and this will be my last buy from it.

Yes dude steer clear Maxtor/Seagate ,, same thing,, both drives blow goat and break down.

Just get ,, WDC or Samsung for drives. thx

I'd have to agree, Seagate/Maxtor are not very good drives. I prefer WD, and samsungs as of late.

I first started to hate Seagate when my 2 month old 500gb seagate drive died and took a large website/video project with it. (yes yes, backup, blah blah)

I'm not sure why a 64MB cache would be of benefit with a USB 2.0 HDD, and while I was disappointed when my WD USB 2.0 HDD didn't include a 7200RPM Black internal drive, it didn't cause me to condemn WD for eternity.

Of course not but the reactions of others in this thread should tell ya something about the mindset (and I use that term loosely ) of some consumers.

Maxtor was was always garbage. All mechanical drives are, but Maxtor was among the worst.
