Do I have a dying hard drive on my hands?

I have an infamous IBM 75GXP (30 GB). Today I was using my computer andI heard beeps coming out of the drive. It stopped working and wouldn't recognize it in POST. I unmounted it and connected it. It made one beep then it was recognized by the computer and started to work again. Should I call for an RMA?

I don't know if they require you use it, but some manufactures have diagnostic programs you can run to test them. I'd clone that drive ASAP just to be on the safe side (or stop using the pc until the replacement comes). It sounds to me like it's dying...the 75gxp's were prone to that

I agree. get all your important stuff copied off the hdd while you still have the chance then try running drive fitness!

Run the diagnosis program, if it finds nothing don't waste your time RMAing it, they'll just send it back to you or send you another (fixed)defective drive.

Sounds bad. Better backup everything your can. IBM has utilities that may be able to diagnose you:
