Do I have a Sandy Bridge dud?

I can only get it stable at 4.5 ghz at 1.368 Vcore(Which fluctuates between 1.368 and 1.36). Any lowe Vcore result in a hardlock while running Linx and any higher multi(46) results in a hardlock while running Linx.

Right now it's stable at 4.5 ghz with 1.36-1.368, passed through 50 passes of Linx with the "all" button clicked. Next I am going run Prime95 for 12 hours.

What is the average Vcore to reach 4.5 ghz? Do I just have a bad CPU or is it the motherboard limiting me?

1.2GHz stable overclock. Certainly not a dud. Might not be a super cherry chip but that's a solid overclock. And you're not pushing crazy voltages through it either. Maybe a great chip would do another 300MHz at that voltage. So no, your chip is not a dud.

1.368 Vcc is not bad for 4.5GHz.

I get 4.5GHz with 1.291 Vcc, and 4.7GHz for 1.370 Vcc (LinX stable) but that is a lapped 2600K with a lapped NH-D14 so my temps are probably lower than yours unless you are on decent water.

Try this guide for the MSI board. I wouldn't set the DRAM voltage to 1.65 as they have but

VDroop Control was set to High VDroop
CPU VCore to 1.38V
CPU IO (VCCIO) to 1.17-1.18V
System Agent Voltage (VCCSA) to 1.185V
Disable Spread Spectrum
Make sure DRAM is not above DDR3-1600

Maybe the CPU PLL Overvoltage setting might help.

I am OK with my OC but I was just wondering isn't that a lot of voltage to get to 4.5 ghz?

Flashed an earlier version of the BIOS and can now do 1.352-1.36 at 4.5 ghz stable through 50 passes of LINX on "all." Next is running Prime95 for 12 hours to see if everything is good.

Overall I am happy I guess don't need much more than 4.5 ghz and I am probably going to end up buying Ivy Bridge anyways lol.

With my 2600k I could only get to 4.3 @ 1.36v --- would not want to bump the voltage any higher.

Have you tried 1.4v+? I believe people getting 5Ghz are 1.45-1.5v. It shouldn't hurt to test it for a few minutes to see if it's stable. Then you can debate if it's worth it. I'm planning on getting one in a month or less and plan to push it well past 4.5 if possible.

I am going to do this on Saturday or Sunday, I don't want to fool around too much now that I have a decent overclock stable(for now).

Slightly off topic but vcore is usually measured at what someone sees in cpu-z while the system is idle right?

If what you are looking for is vcore at idle yes If you want to know vcore at load then looking at it at idle won't really do you much good.

since you have a thread going already i have a new 2600k i have it clocked at 4.2 ghz and the vcore set to auto what is the advantage of setting it myself and the cpu is water cooled

auto will usually set it way too high for me. I am at 4.2 and only need 1.23 to be 100% stable yet auto will use over 1.340 for that speed.
