Hi, I am looking at some notebooks to purchase and I am not sure if I would benefit of discrete graphics card. Could you please help?

I don't play any games. But sometimes do a little bit of video editing with Adobe Premiere. Would it make a big difference with one of the NVIDIA cards?

The rest of the time I do mostly webdesignw tih dreamweaver and photoshop. I do copy some DVDs and watch video streaming over the web. Would a graphic card help with any of these?

Thanks

If you want to watch HD movies, then get a discrete.

The video editing should be grounds for a discrete card.

You can watch HD movies on an integrated graphics chip. As long as you go with something from AMD or Intel's X4500HD lineup, you'll be able to watch full HD content.

But, since you want to use Adobe Premiere, based on system requirements, you'll probably get a boost by going with a dedicated card.

720p works fine on my T2400 and GMA950, so I think you will be fine with the x4500HD

What kind of HD are you talking about? The crappy bitrate 720p HD that isn't really HD, or Blu-ray 1080p quality?

1080p (including Blue-ray):

the GMA X4500HD is capable of "full 1080p high-definition video playback, including Blu-ray disc movies"

Remember, OP's question is about a notebook. There are very few notebook displays capable of 1080p simply because of their size. One is the Dell 1720. Sony also has a Vaio with Blu-Ray.

On a 15.4-in screen, I have a hard time seeing much difference between 720p and 1060p.

True, but if he wanted to output to a larger display, the capability will be there.

Yea, my laptop will do the crappy kind of 720p, the rips from HD movies and TV Shows so that way they are portable. But that is still not too bad for a Core Duo and GMA950

Be sure to avoid the G84/G86 series mobile video cards since they all have defective chips on them.

There's speculation on Notebookreview that it may be in the new 9 series, too.
