dual channel doesnt do much for performance if you have a video card. but it will be nice to only have one card in a year or 2 when you might need to go to a gig. then you have dual channel, and it will be cheap.

Unless your video editing, or plaing games like battle field 1942, XP should do fine with 512.

Eh? He's using a P4 based system, not nForce 2, so there's a bandwidth shortage as long as he's not running PC3200 in dual-channel mode.

That's a hard one. You're taking a significant performance penelty by not running your memory in sync with the bus, but 512MB isn't adiquate for everything, so it's up to you. If you add another PC 2700 stick, you'll be running slightly sub-optimal, but even games such as BF1942 and UT2K3 on ultra-high quality(and other memory intensive tasks) will run fine; if you go the 3200 route, everything will run a bit faster generally, but memory limited apps will run slower. It's up to you.

Odd you would say that about maxtor. I have a stack(8 different ones) of maxtor drives ranging from 330mb to 40gb, a couple of them are about 8-9yrs old and all work perfectly. I have never had a maxtor fail except one that I dropped. WD on the other hand I have owned 2 in the past, neither of which lived to see their first birthday. Against my better judgement, my cheap inner self decided to buy a WD 120gb SE, which I have been running for about 3 months and it has begun to make the same chattering and grinding noises that you guys are describing. Luckily I can back up my info on more dependable albeit slower Maxtors, for when it dies.


Not meaning to hijack someone elses thread. No, your problems are not memory related but I will say that with your mb/cpu you poorly chose your ram. You could increase your mem speeds approx 3 fold by going with DC pc3200.

I have had a problem with a hard drive where it took 140 minutes to install 98 (it really did take that long) where it should have been shorter. It turns out that the hard drive had bad sectors so I replaced it and it was dandy.
