I forget the exact models but I would reconise them when I take them out of storage. Im just a bit bored today and figured I would go out and shoot them on my buddies big property. I dont have a gun license or anything, or any sort of permit for them.

So can I buy some rounds or would they ask for that sort of thing?
I am in California BTW.

In the Peoples Republic of California, any gun you shoot needs to be registered.

You don't need anything special to buy ammo, although I'm sure you need to be 18 years old.

That would be my concern as well.

Ammo shouldn't be an issue, assuming you are of legal age to buy it.

geez, if you had to ask , maybe you shouldn't ....

usually you can only fire small arms indoors... rifles like that need an outdoor range... usually...

well I was going to go to my buddies property, has about 5 acres and in the middle of it is a nice clearing about 100yds long. I figured we could set up some targets at 25yds, and 50yds and fire off 100 rounds.

What kind of rifles? I've got an old german mauser, and a US bolt action springfield, Japanese Arisaka from the WWII era.

Edit: be sure that the guns are safe to shoot. Some old WWII rifles have headspace issues. Also, some WWI vintage US springfields are DANGEROUS to shoot with modern ammo. They have brittle receivers that may explode when the trigger is squeezed. Always make sure the bores are clean, with no cosmoline, and that the mechanisms are in proper working order. Have fun.

You don't need any license to buy ammo.

Age Requirements:
18 for Rifle or Shotgun
21 for any handgun ammunition

I dont know the special cases such as pistol ammo for rifle carbines but that is the way it is in general.

Please check the headspacing of your vintage arms before firing them. Who knows if the headspace has changed over time and your gun might blow up in your face when you shoot it. Any gunsmith can check this for you (probably for free).

hmmm, we do that here in Virginia in the middle of nowhere... you should check the local laws there to see if you can "discharge" firearms.

People really dont know..........

Here goes....

YOU DONT NEED A LICENSE, PERMIT, NOTE FROM YOUR MOMMY OR ACT OF CONGRESS TO BUY A GUN, WALK IN TO YOUR LOCAL GUN SHOP AND PLOP DOWN $500.00 AND TAKE YOUR GUN HOME WITH YOU RIGHT THEN, NO, NO WAITING PERIOD EITHER, ANY LAW ABIDING ADULT CAN BUY A GUN!

O.K, I'm done.

The only restriction I am aware of is the one gun a month rule unless you have a concealed weapon permit, then you can buy all you want.

Just picked up my permit at the courthouse today

Well thanks for the information.
I am taking them down to a gunshop to buy some rounds and get the two guns checked out tomorrow. After that we are heading out to our feild and doing some shooting!

He lives far enough away from anyone that I dont think it will be a problem. I am sure we breaking some kind of law.
And for the record, I am no stranger to firearms. I don't own one, so I am far more inexperienced then many of you. But I know enough about gun safty to not shoot myself in the foot (or my buddies foot).

You should have those guns examined by a gunsmith before firing, if you have never fired them before.
Buy new ammo, do not use old rounds ( old = WW2, stored god only knows how),
Before firing anything, make sure there is an adeqaute backstop to aborb those rounds you're planning on hurling downrange.

Registering a firearm in CA is as easy as faxing a copy of serial number and model to the local constable if it's a family ownerf issue. If you're buying one it's gets stickier.
Ammo can be purchased by 16 yo for rifle / shotgun and 18 for everything else. ( at least it used to be 16)

How old are you?

You don't need a license to buy ammo but I'm pretty sure you have to be at least 18...maybe 21 (not sure on that though since I'm well over 21).

Bull sh!t. There is no "gun registration" here. There is a background check and a waiting period but there is no gun registration. You do have to register a gun labeled as an "assault weapon" but it's just a matter of sending in a card with the serial number on it and your name and address. It's not as though you need any form of ID to shoot it.

I believe only Springfields with SN's below 800,000 have this problem, thereafter it does not occur, nor does it occur in later revisions of the original design.

AFAIK as I know there are no local laws in Sonoma County, as long as you are outside of city limits, you should be ok. I don't believe there is any gun store around here that will check your headspace for free. It usually incurs at least a $20 fee.
