Do I need to connect psu power to 4670 512mb card

I wanted to go with a 4870 1gb card but was talked out of it in various forums. I want to drive two 23" monitors off two dvi ports on a single card for hi def video editing, and am not interested in games. I was told multiple times the 4870 was overkill for what I needed.

What do you think? I can send it back and get a better card with more memory which is what I wanted in the first place.

Also, does my current card get it's power from the pci express slot and not need any psu connections?

My system consists of Asus P6T, 920 i7, 6gb ddr3 ocz gold 1600, 1gb sata samsung hd, lg sata litescribe dvd burner, corsair 650w psu, antec nine hundred case, noctua NH-U12P SE1366 cpu cooler and the HIS video card I mentioned. It seems the video card is really the weak link.

Yeah for video editing you wouldn't need it.

Which program do you use for the editing? Some programs can be accelerated by nVidia videocards using Cuda (only some effects though).

I'm limited to something that costs around $100, so I'm going to download trial versions of Sony Vegas Platinum Pro, Adobe Premier Elements, and Corel VideoStudio Pro x2 and try them all to see which works best with my HD camcorder. I have a Canon HV30 which captures 720p hi def video to mini-dv tapes and so far, the only one of those three on my previous Athlon pc with the trials on it that recognized the Canon HV30 through the firewire connector was Sony Vegas Platinum Pro.

You can use a program like SUPER to do what you're trying to do. It's decent but not all that user friendly IMO.

Badaboom is very fast on NV cards but lacks options. One of the main big-name encoding programs now supports CUDA and would probably increase your encoding performance 10 fold even compared with an i7. Actually you could have saved $$$ on your processor as well because with CUDA it doesn't even use the CPU at all.

Isn't it only certain filters that can be accelerated in Badaboom though (ie. you can't actually encode anything)?

Oh no it encodes the thing. It did a movie in 1.5 hours on my system. The same task used to take 9 hours or so on my rig. And that's with an 8800GTS 320mb, probably the crappiest card that can run CUDA.

You mean transcode right? From what format to what format did you go?
