Do I need to reinstall windows to go from Nvidia i750 to P55 mobo?

I am running Win7 64 on a pretty fresh install. What is recommended currently?

Try it and see? Sometimes it just works, sometimes an in-place repair will fix it and sometimes you just bang your head on the desk till you pass out.

Windows 7 is supposed to be able to do repairs like this. I can't say I've had any luck with it so far, but others report it can work. But a serious chipset change like that is a pretty big challenge.

If you do try it, boot into Safe Mode initially after the swap and let it sit there for a few minutes (if it gets to the desktop). Booting into Safe Mode will exclude some hardware-specific drivers that could cause the machine to crash or reset, then allow Windows to negotiate the hardware change. Hope for the best, prepare for the worst.

It is Not a problem at all if you backup the Drive with Acronis TrueImage and restore it to the new drive using the TrueImage universal Restore.

The Universal Restore plug-in strips the incompatible drivers and load the OS generic Drivers instead. ( http://kb.acronis.com/content/2149 ).

Thus after Universal Restore Windows Boots up regardless of the chipset (hardware) and adjusts most of the drivers.

Few might Not adjust (Could be Audio and some special devices), but at that point the drivers can be updated from inside the OS with No need to any real changes.

But it shouldn't be, chipsets are supposed to be almost transparent to the OS. I have never understood why so much focus was put on chipset drivers, issues, etc with Windows because with Linux they "just work" as does moving installations between chipsets.

Except when it is a problem. A friend of mine was just bitching about the universal restore stuff recently, it booted but for some reason he couldn't get all of the drivers working in the newly restored OS. It really astounds me how MS managed to make something so difficult that really should be so simple.

W7 is really good with this, I went from a phenom 2 940 on amd770 to a i5 750 on p55 and did not reinstall windows. As soon as I set my BIOS settings to match my old setup it booted fine and I went ahead and did drivers and everything and it has been running great since.

Win 7 is very accommodating provided that the New hardware pass the initial Boot.

At time When Win 7 starts, depending on the hardware, it might Not be able negotiate the Drivers for the new chipset and the interface for the HD.

In such a case you have No choice but either to fresh install, or to do the process with TrueImage Universal as I described before.
