Do I really need a heatsink and fan for the Tbird.

My problem is, I will have everything I need by tomorrow for a new system, except for the CPU (Tbird 1.4 Ghz) heatsink/fan. Can I get by without one for a few days, or is that not advised?

You turn that system on with no heatsinkand fan and you will have a DEAD tbird and it only take like 8 seconds.

Renob is right
It will take a couple of second for that Tbird to overheat and fail, voids warranty!!!

You can turn it on, I would order another T-Bird right now to replace the one you fry.

I'll buy it for $5 for a keychain!

DO NOT power up your system without a HSF combo. Like previously stated, 7 seconds or so to fry it. You won't even make it through the BIOS.

But he has a large heatsink that gets it's airflow from duct off the power supply. A large heatsink, very good case ventilation, & underclocking would probably get you by for a while, but no heatsink at all is a guaranteed roasted TBird.

Faced a similar dilema myself. I forgot to pick up a tube of thermal grease for my tbird when I bought the case at the local shop, so I was all prepared to run it w/o it. Then I realized the $5-6 in gas I'd spend to run to my second job, pick up a tube, and come back plus my time was in no way worth $155. So I was a patient little PC Builder, went and got some, and the system ROCKS now.

Waiting may be the hardest part, but when building a pc, sometimes its the most important step.

Some mobos won't even let you tturn on the computer unless you have a working fan hooked up to the CPU fan header. There is a reason for that. T-Birds will fry within seconds if they are not properly cooled.

You're crazy! Go ahead unless you wanna fry your chip. Patience is virtue...wait a few days and order a quality HSF. Taisol's and Alpha pep's are like 30-40 bucks...it's worth the money and patience.

I kind of do too..
There are some things you just have to know, otherwise you wouldn't be taking on the task of building your own PC. It's like jumping in a car, pointing at the steering wheel and saying "what's this? How do I make it go?"..

Charles: way to find that damed thread man.. I was looking for that forever.. nice. Where the hell is Leo V nowadays anyways? I guess he's just getting plenty of sleep eh.. what with all that silence..

You dont need a HSF, I run my 1 GHz AXIA Y @ 1.7 GHz with only a small glob of artic silver on the top to passively disapate the heat.

Thats nothing Tunaboo I removed my HSF and put in a 1600wat hair dryer , then I set my system out in the sun. Heat is no problem.

Also, the electric bill for my leather char is kind of high. Inside the chair is a 100 pound piece of metal that heats up when electricity is applied to it. I am going to run a bar of metal from my proc. die to the middle of my chair, so the heat will spread out and warm up my tush.

I don't think you should be building a computer, you obviously have done no reasearch at all. This has to be a gag.

If your computer room is located inside a meat locker, your should be ok. Other than that, patience is a virtue.

No, you don't need to put on the HSF. That is, if you like roasted TBird.

3-4 seconds is usually enough to fry 'em crispy
