Do monitors blow up?

One of my monitors, it's 7 or 8 years old, started to malfunction. I never had a problem with it before; it's a 21" CTR type. This is what happens... When I turn the monitor ON, it starts to make really loud and fast crackling noises. The screen does not turn ON either. I think I smelled something "fried" as well. I turned it OFF after a few seconds. Tired two more times and the same thing.

Any ideas?

They do burn out sometimes. Nothing much you can do but send it in for service if you can find a place that works on that type (I assume the warranty is out ). But it may be cheaper to just buy a new one, or a refurb.

But they don't blow up. They implode.

An 8 year old 21 inch CRT? I didn't think they even knew of the existence of double digits back then.

The warranty is definately over. I am guessing it is dead. Oh well I had a spare 1200NF sitting around anyways. I will take it in the back yard tomorrow, get an extension cord and see what happens...hehe...

monitors do blow up

I knew a guy who's monitor blew up and burnt down his store.

I've been in a room when a monitor has gone POP before. I think it's the capacitors or transformers doing the popping. And that acrid smokey smell u smelt pretty much means it's dead.

I dont think it would be wise to wait until it blows up, when a monitor is used more then 5 years, it start to get worse in a down syndrome, a sign that is going malfunction pretty soon. Just buy a new one and toss it away. heck, some of it just die in less then a year, nothing last forever, oh well.

Monitors Do NOT blow up, for proof "See what happens when a 19-inch color monitor is shot with a rifle" at this

Heh Yeah, I know that in 1994 I was using a 9" monochrome monitor, but did I complain? No! I loved it!

Submit, that sounds exactly like what happened to my 19" monitor, except that it wasn't that old. The first time it happened was because my bright roommates had played a trick on me and water had "somehow" entered the case, and even after I had dried it out for like a week and a half, it still didn't work, it just fried. The second time was the same type of monitor (Optiquest) and it was the same model and type, but no water was involved. The good thing is that the part wasn't too expensive to replace and the authorized repair center is here in my town, but the bad thing was that the labor cost more than the part, a lot more. I think the total to fix it would be around $100-120. If it's worth it to you, go get an estimate for repair cause there will probably be a few more years of use left in it, or you could fix it and then sell it and buy a new one.

I recently upgraded my 1200NF to a 2000FP and so the 1200NF was sitting in the corner in the basement. So yesterday I had to carry the damn thing to the first floor and swap it out with the dead one. These 21" -ers are quite heavy...

I am pretty sure you were joking about this, but just in case: Don't do anything stupid. Try to dispose of it properly if you can, but don't try opening it up or pour water in it while plugged in outside. I'm sure you knew this but, just in case....

The CRT can't blow up, but the capacitors and stuff on the PCB outside of the tube could fail and spark and pop and cause a fire. But one doesn't generally call that "exploding" or blowing up.
