Do most Caucasian parents care about who their kids date after the age of 18?

It seems that Caucasian parents want to place an emphasis on independence for their kids at the youngest age possible. So they want their kids to be independent and on their own after the age of 18 or so.

So this got me thinking, do most Caucasian parents really care about who their offsprings date after the age of 18?
Well not really care, but would they really make much of an effort to enforce who their offspring date. Of course, it is logical for them to speak out against someone who was involved in a lot of crimes and such.

I know this is a generalization, but I am sure this is true to an extent. I am not the only who have experienced how White people are more "independent". This seems to be the cultural norm for Caucasians.


I am Asian, and my cousin also have stated something like this about Caucasians. Culturally, Asians are more tight-knit. We placed a lot of emphasis on family and many kids in an Asian family live with their parents well after the age of 21. So Asian parents would want to keep a close eyes on their kid's life even well after the age of 18.

I am a Caucasian parent, and absolutely did care who my kids were dating. I couldn't care less about the race of who they were dating, but my best to help them choose wisely. I'm greatly disappointed in a female relative of mine - smart girl, great future, but she is dating a loser - high school dropout who does nothing but play video games all day.

My Caucasian parents essentially cut me off at 18, that is the exception, not the rule.

Wtf is wrong with you. Why wouldn't a parent? Heck, we thought son #2 was going to stay at home for a few years, so we were remodeling the garage into an apt for him. It would have allowed him to rapidly save up $100k or so to put down on a house.

I have two daughters above the age of 18, and one who is about to be 17. As DrPizza said, I absolutely care who they date, but it has nothing to do with race. As for "enforcing" anything, that's a whole different story. In my experience trying to enforce who your kids can and can't have a relationship with usually backfires on the enforcer. All you can ultimately do is try to pass on your values and hope they choose wisely.

As for remaining at home past the age of 18, virtually all young adults in the U.S. do, and in most other developed nations as well. It takes more time to prepare for adult life in a modern society. If all you need is your own hut and mule you can kick them out a lot earlier. In fact there are times when I would gladly buy a hut and mule if that would get rid of them.

I didn't particularly care before she was 18. It's not up to me. All I can do is teach her how to reason, offer advice, and be there for support rather things go well or poorly.

At least one of my parents still umm... Ill say more annoy than harass me about it, but only barely, even though I've since graduated college, have a job, live on my own, etc.

A friend of mine and his sister(both adopted) got kicked out when they turned 18. Pretty hardcore, and I'm not sure what the reasoning was behind it. His father was a bit of a flake though. The parents "permanently" moved to FL three times. They'd sell everything, come back, and then do it again

would i care who they date? yes why not? seems rather silly that at 18 you stop loving and wanting the best for them.

I am not a parent, but I have non-white adult friends living with their parents, and their parents' attempt to control them is a great source of problems. I don't mean just dating either.

Of course a parent should care about their children, even in adulthood, and they should care about who they date. But trying to control them, telling them who they can date, that is different and I think its wrong.

I'm not white, and my parents would care about who I date, but they would not try to control me. We are very tight-knit, family is very important to us, but they respect me as an adult and consequently we get along very well. These other cultures seem to think control and domination over their children is okay for some reason. It may not be their culture though, maybe they are just crazy and have problems with wanting to control their children and "culture" is an easy excuse.

If my parents slip and hit their head and then tried to enforce who I can date, well sorry, but not gonna happen. Love them, but every human adult has the right to be at the command of his or her own life.
