Do most laptops support multiple monitors

I've always used a dock with a laptop so I've never tried two monitors from two different connectors (VGA/HDMI) but I see a lot of info about having to use displayport or USB-C to run multiple monitors. Is there a good way to know if a laptop would support two external monitors (even if the main display has to be off)?

Not all, but most. Some companies are pretty explicit about it, and will tell you how far you can go. Apple, for example, notes that the 15-inch MacBook Pro can drive up to two 5K displays (they'll currently have to be LG UltraFine 5Ks, but still).

I think most do because the intel hdxxx supports multiple monitors. It takes very little effort for them to add it since it doesn't require much silicon.

Since todays video chips found in laptops are either intel, nvidia, or AMD, and all support multi monitors, there is a very high chance anything you buy now will do atleast built in LCD+HDMI 2 display output. The higher end you get, you get display ports and that also usualy means the video chip used can do 3 displays (lcd panel being one). Also thunderbolt 3 and fast usb 3.0 can give you display options.
